DODSONVILLE — Though the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs suffered a 10-0 six inning loss to the West Union Lady Dragons Monday, the coaching staff of LC sees the improvement the team has achieved since the start of the season three weeks ago.
"We are getting more than one runner on the bases each inning, and that is a positive for us," LC head coach Meredith Krisch said. "I am very pleased with the strides we are making. We are making progress, but we have a long way to go."
The Lady Mustangs tallied five hits and forced two walks in the Southern Hills League match-up but were unable to handle the pitching from Bowles, as she struck out LC 12 times to gain the victory.
On Monday at LCHS, West Union scored runs in four different innings for their 10-run win.
WU started their scoring in the second with three runs from Foster, Ross and Bowles.
In the third, the lead went to six runs as Shiverer, Campbell and Foster all touched home plate. In the fifth, Knauff rounded the bases, and in the sixth, Haitz, Campbell and Foster all added runs to the scoreboard.
The Mustangs had one base runner in the second, with Jessica Davidson forcing a walk.
In the third, Sarah Chisman walked and Davidson singled. In the fifth, Chisman doubled for the Lady Mustangs, reaching the bases for the second time in the game.
Christine Easterling singled and stole second in the bottom of the sixth.
Courtney Covert struck out two batters in three innings of work in the circle. Davidson had four strikeouts in relief as she entered the circle in the fourth inning.
"Jessica stepped up," Krisch said. "She is very talented and a good pitcher to have in relief for Courtney. I am proud of all the girls and how they keep battling."
