Dettwiller homers twice in Lady Tigers' win over Eastern

GREENFIELD — The McClain Lady Tigers wrapped up their first week of play in a big way Friday against the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors. With the help of two home runs by senior Megan Dettwiller, the Lady Tigers gained their third win of the year, defeating EB, 8-3 on a cold and windy day at Daryle C. Unger Field.
Dettwiller, who was also the starting pitcher, hit a solo home run in the first inning and a three-run home run to put the game away in the sixth. The blast in the sixth came with two outs.
Senior Jenna Perie had a productive day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with one RBI. Perie, a junior, had three doubles and scored two runs.
MHS finished with 11 hits, while EB had five hits.
"We hit the ball extremely well today off a very good pitcher," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "Defensively, we still made a couple mistakes, but today we made up for it offensively.
"Megan Dettwiller was 2-for-4 with two home runs … that's great leadership right there. Jenna Perie smacked the ball with three doubles. She did a great job."
The non-league battle between the South Central Ohio League and the Southern Hills League was close throughout, with the game tied at three through four innings.
MHS (3-1) regained the lead in the fifth as Perie scored off an error in the outfield on a ball hit by Brittany Mullikin. On Thursday against East Clinton, Mullikin was 3-for-3. In that same game, Perie was 2-for-3 with a home run.
Then came the four-run sixth, and it was game over after that.
The sixth began with Sasha Lawwell taking first on an infield error, followed with consecutive outs by the Lady Tigers. Senior Frankie Wise kept the inning alive with a base hit, then Dettwiller rocketed the ball out of the park for the 8-3 final score.
Earlier this week, Dettwiller went 3-for-4 against Logan Elm, scoring the Lady Tigers' lone run in the loss to LE.
In a big moment in the top of the sixth inning, MHS produced defensively when Perie caught a throw from right field from Dettwiller, tagging the EB runner out at the plate for the second out of the inning, saving a run. Landrum stuck out the next batter to end the inning.
Wise, who had the game-winning extra inning hit to open the season, had two hits and scored two runs against Eastern.
The first three MHS runs were scored by Dettwiller, Wise and Landrum in the first, third and fourth innings. Perie knocked in Wise with a one-out double in the third, and Landrum scored her run via a two-out double by Alyssa Bean.
Landrum was the winning pitcher, as she entered the game in relief with a 3-3 tied score. Landrum has two wins this season.
"Cierra came in and got the win," Haines said. "She's pitched the last three games. She beat East Clinton (Thursday) and pitched against Logan Elm … Cierra came in and shut the door. I was very pleased with that."
EB scored one run in the third and two in the fourth inning.
The Lady Tigers will travel to play the Hillsboro Lady Indians on Monday at 5 p.m. Last season, the teams split their season series.
"I told the team after the Logan Elm game that we have to get better every day, and we have gotten better every day, we really have," Haines said. "We've just got to clean up some things defensively.
