Dear John ... I mean BCS

Lately, there have been some "Dear John" letters being written about baseball teams ending their seasons.

So that gave me an idea I am going to borrow.

With the 2010 BCS rankings coming out this Sunday, there are people predicting Boise State will be ranked, gulp, No. 1 in the standings.

So with that, I've decided to write a letter to the BCS computer who will crunch out the numbers and probably make the Broncos the No. 1 team in the BCS.

Dear BCS Computer,

What happened?

You used to be cool, in my book. You always had pretty good matchups planned with your rankings of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams you picked to play for a championship.

Without you, we wouldn't have had Texas and USC in the Rose Bowl. There would have been no magical comeback by Vince Young.

Without you, there would have been no Ohio State vs. Miami 2002 National Title game. Heck, even in your first try, you helped Tee Martin and the Tennessee Vols get to the point where they had a chance to win a title, the season after Peyton Manning was drafted, which they did.

But what I am hearing from the so-called experts is you want to make Boise State the first No. 1 team in the BCS standings this season.

Say it ain't so!

No, better yet, I wanna know: why?

I'd like for you to give me a reason why they are No. 1.

Who have they defeated? Oh, I know, they beat a bad Virginia Tech team (barely) in the first game of the season. Since then, VT lost to the fourth president of the United States of America …James Madison.

Sure, they are probably a good school when it comes to book learnin', but on the football field, they are a second-tier football school in the former I-AA.

That win equals Ohio State beating Illinois or Indiana.

Besides beating VT, the Broncos have defeated Wyoming, Oregon State, New Mexico State and Toledo.

At least in the Big Ten or the SEC, they play teams who can kinda match up. The rest of the Boise State schedule looks like this: San Jose State, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, Idaho, Fresno State, Nevada and Utah State.

Wow.

C'mon, you can't do this to college football fans who want to see the best teams, who beat and bang on one another for an entire season. Not a team who plays in a weak (a Steve Urkel weak) conference, then just prepares for one big game a season for a national audience to see.

I understand we all like the underdog story. It can be a good story, but only if it is done right, like a George Mason in the NCAA Tournament.

BCS computer, if you mess up the national title game by putting Boise State ahead of all the other teams – and I don't care if those teams from better conferences have one loss – you are making a big mistake.

There is no way you can say one-loss Alabama is worse than an undefeated Boise State team from the WAC. If you think that is true, then your entire system is WHACK!

Just think about it and let me know on Sunday, and each Sunday until the final regular season game has been played, what your opinion is.

But just remember, you can always be replaced with a playoff system.

Sincerely,
Stephen Forsha
