Cumberland nets career-high; SSCC falls to KCU

     Southern State sophomore Tirrell Cumberland set a career-high in scoring Saturday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough for the Patriots to earn the win, as they fell to Kentucky Christian University 124-105.

     Cumberland (Hillsboro), once again, came up big for the Patriots as he was two points short of the overall single-game scoring record for the men’s program, netting 49 points against KCU. The sophomore knocked down eight 3-pointers, five in the second half. He was a perfect 13 of 13 from the foul line and made six two-point baskets.

     Cumberland scored 30 points in the second half.

     North Adams graduate and SSCC freshman Tyler Jimison finished with 20 points, going 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. He made six shots from the floor.

     SSCC also had scoring from freshman Jeremy Bennington with 16 points. He was 5 of 5 in free throw shooting, banking in one 3-pointer and four two-point buckets.

     Fairfield graduate and SSCC sophomore Andrew McKay scored seven points, with three coming from beyond the arc. Freshman Chris Fuhrman (Whiteoak) scored five points, including one 3-pointer. Lynchburg-Clay grad and SSCC sophomore Josh Hawk finished with four points. Hawk was 2 of 3 from the free-throw line.

     Kevin Royal (Fayetteville) scored two points and Wayne Noble netted one point with a free throw for SSCC.

     SSCC trailed 63-52 at the half, then lost the second half 61-53. The Patriots made five 3-pointers in the first half.

     Eric McKee led KCU with 38 points. McKee hit seven 3-pointers, while going 1 of 1 from the free-throw line and scoring eight times from the field.

    KCU had four others wrap up the game in double figures in scoring, as they made a team total of 14 3-pointers. SSCC was 30 of 35 from the free-throw line.
