WASHINGTON C.H. — Post 129 wrapped up their regular season series with the Washington C.H. Post 25 Aces Thursday by collecting 11 hits and four walks to take home a 4-2 SCOL win.
Hillsboro has now won four straight games, defeating Chillicothe Post 757, the Chillicothe Capitals twice and now the league win over the Aces. In their last 10 games, Hillsboro is 8-2, and in their last 13 games, they have been victor 10 times.
Against Washington C.H. this season, Post 129 went 4-1, winning the final four games of the series.
Post 129 now stands at 18-20 overall and 8-5 in league play. Post 129 has three regular season games remaining, with two against Post 757 on Saturday and one this coming Monday at Circleville Post 134, all three games SCOL games. The game with Piqua on Sunday has been canceled due to Piqua needing to make up a league game.
"We are playing our best baseball right now, and that was the recipe last season, and hopefully it works agains this season," Hillsboro head coach Ritchie Butler said. "We didn't compound our mistakes with them scoring a lot of runs, and we kept our heads up and continued to move along.
"We've played four tight ball games in a row, and we've won them all, so I'm very pleased with that."
Of the 11 hits by Post 129, Dustin Taylor was 3-for-3 with a walk, one run and one RBI. Ian Adams and Zach Uhl each went 2-for-3, and Cody Shaver was 2-for-4. Adams and Uhl each collected one run and one walk. Shaver had a stolen base and one run.
Tucker Hughes was 1-for-2 with a walk, one run and he was hit by a pitch.
Hillsboro led the entire game, scoring twice in the first inning, once in the fourth, and for good measure they added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, taking a two-run advantage.
The top of the first belonged to the away Post 129 club, as Adams, on a 1-2 count, hit the ball past the shortstop for a lead-off single.
Following a sacrifice bunt by Corey Walker, Adams was joined on the bases when Hughes took first when he was hit by a pitch. Adams raced home on a double by Shaver, with Shaver getting the clutch 3-2 full-count hit.
Nathaniel Miller scored Hughes on a sacrifice fly to right field, making the score 2-0.
Hillsboro's two-run lead was cut in half by the Aces with Colton Sanderson scoring on a two-out single by Carter, which sailed over the head of Walker at short. Sanderson reached the bases with a lead-off double down the third base line.
Post 129 regained their two-run lead in the fourth inning with Taylor, who led off the inning with a single to left field, scoring on a line-drive base hit to right field by Hughes with two outs. Pappas singled, moving Taylor to second before the RBI hit by Hughes.
Again, the Aces fought back to within a run of Hillsboro with Bret Starkey scoring on an errant throw to third base, as Starkey tried to steal the base.
The insurance run scored by Hillsboro in the seventh inning began with Uhl doubling to the centerfield wall with one out. After the second out was recorded, Taylor, on an 0-2 count, singled to centerfield, scoring Uhl for a 4-2 lead.
The win on the hill was credited to Tyler Campbell, who improves to 3-2 on the season. Campbell pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks.
"We had good pitching tonight," Butler said. "Tyler throws strikes in the zone and gets batters out."
The loss on the hill went to Mike Penwell, who started the game for the Aces. Pitching in relief was Chance Therrien in the sixth inning with two outs.
Though Hillsboro had a couple defensive mishaps, one of which led to a run, they did have good moments, ending the second inning on a 4-6-3 double play with Hughes fielding the ball, tossing it to Walker, who threw to Miller at first.
In the bottom of the fourth, Shaver threw out a runner at home with a lazier throw, right on target, from shallow centerfield for the third out of the inning.
The sixth inning saw Uhl throw out a runner at second base on a throw from left field.
"This was a good team win, and everyone contributed," Butler said.
