Clinton-Massie crushes Hillsboro, 72-7

In a word, this one was brutal.
The Hillsboro Indians opened their South Central Ohio League slate with an 18-yard pass play from Christian Cundiff to Chase Gilliland on the first play from scrimmage Friday night against the Clinton-Massie Falcons. The play proved to be the Indians' only first down of the first half. In fact, they ended the half with negative yards from scrimmage against the defending SCOL champions.
The Falcons, meanwhile, amassed more than 320 first-half yards and raced to a 49-0 lead after two periods on their way to a 72-7 victory at Richards Memorial Field Friday, Sept. 16.
With sophomore quarterback Jake Burnham leading the CM wishbone offense in place of Tyler Uetrecht, the Falcons ran the ball – and threw it – at will against the undersized Indians.
After a Hillsboro fumble, Bayle Wolf scored the first of his five first-half TDs on a two-yard run off right tackle at the 9:24 mark. Geramie Dart's kick made it a 7-0 game.
Christian Wildey returned the ensuing kickoff to the Tribe's 22. But it was a quick "three and out" for the offense and Gilliland made the first of his six first-half punts.
Wolf his second touchdown on a nine-yard run to give the Falcons a 14-0 lead at the 5:11 mark.
Dillon Hunick brought the kickoff to the Hillsboro 12 yard line and once again the Falcons' defense stopped the Indians. After an incomplete pass, Wildey carried the ball twice for zero net yards. Gilliland, who continued to kick from deep in his own territory, drilled the ball to the Hillsboro 41.
On the Falcons' first play in their third series of downs, Wildey sacked Burnham for a four-yard loss. But on a third and long, Wolf sprinted for 16 yards and a first down. With 34 seconds left in the opening period, Wolf ran it into the end zone from two yards out and his third TD in less than 12 minutes of play. The quarter ended with Clinton-Massie in control, 21-0.
Hillsboro had possession to open the second period, but once again punted after three plays.
One minute into the second period, Burnham connected with Wolf for a 45-yard touchdown pass. Dart's kick hit the left upright to leave the score 27-0 early in the second quarter.
Things weren't going to improve for the Indians. After losing possession on a fumble and three punts, the offense continued to struggle. On a third-and-10 snap, Cundiff rolled out to pass but found CM's Dylan Rose instead of his intended receiver. Rose scampered 35 yards for another score. The point after was no good; however, the Falcons were on cruise control with a 33-0 advantage.
The Falcons, coming off two consecutive early season losses were not letting up, either. They scored again at the 6:09 mark on a 30-yard touchdown by Wyatt Running. The point after made it 40-0. Three minutes later, Wolf scored his fifth TD on an 11-yard run to make it 47-0.
The Falcons scored their final two points of the half on a safety after a high snap sailed over Gilliland's head near the goal line. Gilliland alertly kicked the football through the back of the end zone.
The half ended with Massie in full command, 49-0.
Hillsboro finally dented the scoreboard in the third period when Cundiff connected with Tyrand Cumberland for a 65-yard touchdown.
Wyatt Running, Zach Zurface and Sam Asher scored second-half touchdowns for the Falcons. With 8 seconds left in the game, the Falcons added two more points on the game's second safety.
"Until somebody proves differently, Clinton-Massie's still the best team in the league," Indians Head Coach Brian Spicer said after the loss.
The Indians (0-4) host Washington C.H. Friday, Sept 23, while Clinton-Massie (2-2) hosts Miami Trace.
