Aces fly away with extra-inning win over Hillsboro

HILLSBORO — A game close enough that it went into extra innings tied at one wasn't so close when the eighth inning was complete.
The Hillsboro Post 129 club allowed four runs in the top of the eighth, allowing the Washington C.H. Post 25 Aces to fly away with a 5-1 win in the first game of the Hillsboro Wooden Bat Tournament, Friday at Shaffer Park.
Neither team scored in the first five and a half innings, but a run scored by Post 129 (5-11) in the bottom of the sixth changed the entire outlook of the game because that is when the runs started to show up on the new scoreboard on the Legion field in Hillsboro.
The lone Hillsboro run crossed the plate when Bryce Bean scored on an infield error by the Aces with one out. Bean initially took to the bases with a lead-off walk. He went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Corey Walker and took third on a ball hit by Tucker Hughes, which, in turn, led to the errant throw to first for the run.
Hillsboro needed just three outs to seal the win but allowed one run in the top of the seventh, while they were held scoreless in the same inning.
The seventh looked promising for the Post 129 team with Ian Adams crushing the ball to the centerfield fence with one out, causing the Aces to make a pitching change. Adams went to third on the second out of the inning, with Nathaniel Miller moving Adams over on a ground out, but the third out was recorded, stranding Miller at third.
With the score tied at eight, the top half of the eighth didn't have a single break for the home team with Colton Sanderson and Kyle Hawk reaching base for the Aces on a walk and error.
Chance Therrien was hit by a pitch, loading the bases without a single base hit.
Bret Starkey followed with a single down the third base line, hitting the bag for two RBIs on the single. Justin Hall replaced Starkey at first as a pinch runner, where he easily stole second. Hall was joined on the bases when Chris Warning walked, as the bases were loaded again for the Aces.
A diving stop at third by Bean gave the Aces their first out, but two more runs were scored on a double by Cody Snyder.
Most of the game, though, consisted of innings that went three-up, three-down when no more than three batters went to the plate per half inning from the top of the third through the top of the sixth, except in the bottom of the fifth, with Hillsboro sending four to the plate. Most of that was due to the pitching of Hillsboro's Tyler Campbell and Washington's Nathan Wheeler.
The win was credited to Therrien, who pitched 1 2-3 innings with two strikeouts, no hits and no walks. The loss went to Campbell, who left the game in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs. Jacob Dillon pitched in relief of Campbell.
Campbell finished with four strikeouts, allowing three hits, one walk and one hit batter.
At the plate for Post 129, Bean drew two walks, and Walker had two sacrifice bunts. Dustin Taylor had a sacrifice bunt and forced a walk.
For Washington, Tyler Spears and Cody Snyder each went 2-for-4.
Zach Uhl went 2-for-3 with the most hits for the Hillsboro team against Post 25.
Hughes, Cody Shaver, Brady Camp, and Adams all had one hit.
The loss drops Post 129 to 5-11 overall.
