Lady ’Cats lose to visiting Fayetteville

In a game where the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats had a chance to clinch a share of first place in Division II of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference, they suffered a heartbreaking loss on Thursday, Feb. 1 to the visiting Fayetteville Lady Rockets, 48-45.

WHS (13-9) finishes in second place in the SHAC Division II standings with an 8-5 record in the conference, while Fayetteville won the conference as they currently have a SHAC record of 9-3, with one game remaining in conference action. Since this win over WHS, Fayetteville lost in OT to Lynchburg-Clay in a non-conference contest, for an overall record of 13-7.

The Thursday game saw WHS lead 13-10 as the first quarter closed, and both teams scored eight points in the second quarter, leaving Whiteoak with a three-point lead at 21-18. 

The biggest difference of the game was the third quarter where Fayetteille (13-7) took the lead with a 19-12 third frame, leaving the Lady Rockets in front 37-33. In the fourth quarter, Whiteoak scored 12 points and Fayetteville added 11 points for the three-point win. 

Lydia Carr led Whiteoak with 16 points (two 3-pointers) and 11 rebounds for a double-double. 

Jaylie Parr totaled nine points for WHS, along with a team-high four assists. 

Other final scoring totals for WHS included   Addison Roberts (five), Kylee Hamm (four), Kelsey Monteith (three), Bri Hill (three), Addy Hauke (three) and Molly McMullen (two). 

McMullen led WHS with three steals, and Hill led the team with one block. 

WHS committed 14 turnovers, and Fayetteville totaled 10 turnovers. 

As a team, the Lady ’Cats totaled 35 rebounds, 13 assists, six steals and one block. Fayetteville finished with 32 rebounds, 13 assists, five steals and three blocks. 

Fayetteville was led in scoring by Lilly Carlier with 15 points, and she added eight rebounds. Scarlett Crawford and Ryley Kleemeyer each finished with nine points. Kleemeyer led FHS with nine rebounds.
