WASHINGTON C.H. — The Whiteoak Lady Wildcats were unable to keep pace with the host Washington Lady Blue Lions in the final stages of their non-conference game Wednesday night, leading to the Lady ’Cats falling by a 37-33 score.
The loss was just the third of the season for Whiteoak, as they fell to 8-3 overall following the Dec. 27 loss in Fayette County, but it was both teams struggling to make shots fall in the first frame, with Washington leading the quarter 10-6 after eight minutes were completed.
Neither team scored until the 6:50 mark of the first when Washington’s Maggi Wall connected with a jumper, followed by another Lady Blue Lion basket from Calee Ellars — who also sank a jump shot — putting Washington in front at 4-0 with 5:24 left in the first.
Whiteoak reached the scoring column with 3:34 left in the opening quarter for their first points of the game, as Kylee Hamm made a basket. Wall put WCH ahead by five points with 3:12 left on the clock following a 3-pointer, but Whiteoak answered with four points off baskets by Jaylie Parr and Addison Roberts, whose jumper from the corner of the court brought the Lady ’Cats within a point of tying the hosts at 7-6 with 2:17 on the clock.
Washington took a four-point lead to end the first with a 3-pointer at the 1:59 mark for a 10-6 score.
The Lady Blue Lions outscored Whiteoak 9-6 in the second quarter for a 19-12 halftime score.
In the second, Whiteoak had a free throw made by Torie Potts, a three-point play from Lydia Carr and a put-back basket by Parr with 1:43 left in the quarter.
Washington in the second had a layup, jumper and 3-pointer from Eliana Racine, and a basket by Wall, giving Washington a seven-point halftime lead.
The third frame saw Whiteoak outscore Washington 13-9, but the Lady ’Cats never were able to gain the lead in the frame, although the score was tied with 1:25 left in the quarter at 25-25.
Parr and Potts each scored four points in the third quarter, while Roberts made three free throws, and with two points was Carr.
Washington broke the tie with a 3-pointer by Racine with 1:02 on the scoreboard, as that concluded the third-quarter scoring with Washington holding a 28-25 lead after three quarters.
After Washington built a five-point lead following a long jumper by Racine, Whiteoak battled back with a 3-pointer by Parr and a basket in the paint by Carr at the 5:09 mark of the final frame.
Washington came back with a free throw made at the 3:17 mark, but Whiteoak answered with a 3-pointer from Hamm, putting Whiteoak ahead with 2:53 left in the quarter.
The lead was short-lived with Washington scoring the final six points of the game, as Calleigh Wead-Salmi made four straight free throws, and with .32 left in the game it was a layup off a rebound by Kaithlyn Maguiling that sealed the win for the home team Lady Blue Lions.
Washington is now 6-6 overall this season.
Parr and Carr led Whiteoak in scoring with nine points each, followed by five points each by Hamm, Roberts and Potts.
WHS finished 5-of-11 from the free-throw line, and Washington was 5-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Racine led Washington with 19 points, followed by Wall (seven), Ellars (five), Weed-Salmi (four) and Maguiling (two).
