Mustangs win at Paint Valley

Earning their 10th win of the season, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs did so on the road by defeating the host Paint Valley Bearcats 72-41 Tuesday in a regular-season non-conference battle in Bainbridge. 

LCHS (10-11) opened the game with a first quarter that sent them to an eight-point lead at 18-10. LCHS won the second quarter at 11-7 for a halftime lead of 29-17. 

The third quarter saw the Mustangs break away with a 27-point quarter in the eight-minute frame while the Bearcats scored 12 points. In the final quarter, LCHS added 16 more points to their final total, while Paint Valley scored 12 points in the fourth. 

Denver Clinton finished the game with 22 points to lead the Mustangs, making nine two-point baskets, plus he was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Clinton also collected five rebounds, one assist, three steals and a block. 

Tanner Roberts finished the game with 13 points, as he made six two-pointers, and he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Roberts finished with a double-double by adding 11 rebounds (six offensive) and two assists. 

All 12 players on the Mustangs reached the scoring column against Paint Valley, with Trevor Niehaus following with nine points by making four two-pointers and one free throw. Niehaus also had seven rebounds, two assists and three steals. 

Quin Wells totaled eight points off a 3-pointer, two two-point baskets, and he was 1-of-2 in his free throw attempts. Wells then added two rebounds and one assist. 

Linkin Barnett (one 3-pointer, two rebounds, two assists, two steals, one block), Harley Lewis (one rebound, one block) and Aric Slack (two rebounds, one steal) each scored four points. 

Scoring two points each were Elam Faust (two rebounds, two assist, two steals), Carter Faust (one rebound, one assist), and Austin Manning (one steal, one block). Caden Boone (one rebound, one assist) and Rhalstan Greene (one assist) each scored one point in the win.

The team totals for LCHS were 27 two-pointers, two 3-pointers (Wells, Barnett), and they went 12-of-23 from the free-throw line. Lynchburg-Clay also had totals of 34 rebounds (eight offensive), 12 assists, 13 steals and four blocks. 

The Mustangs (4-8, 10-11) have one regular-season game remaining that will be played on Saturday, Feb. 21 at home against the West Union Dragons (2-10, 3-16) in a Southern Hills Athletic Conference showdown at 3:30 p.m. JV starts at 2 p.m.
