Mustangs drop SHAC game to Eastern
Friday night (Jan. 12) saw the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs drop a Southern Hills Athletic Conference game to the visiting Eastern Warriors, 66-43, as a strong second half led the Warriors to victory on LC's homecoming night.
The first half saw LCHS trail by only a single point after two quarters at 25-24, with EHS scoring 19 points in the first quarter and six points in the second frame. LCHS collected a 10-point first frame and 14 more points in the second quarter.
Eastern’s second half saw them break away from the Mustangs with the Warriors scoring 21 points in the third quarter and 20 points in the fourth frame. The Mustangs scored 11 points in the third and added eight points in the fourth quarter.
Eastern was led in the scoring column by Pryce Murphy with 16 points and Grady Barber with 11 points. EHS shot 8-of-12 from the free-throw line.
The Mustangs saw Cody Bell lead the way with 12 points, making four 3-pointers. Next was Austin Bell with nine points, as he made four two-point buckets and he went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line.
Jay Cordrey and Trevor Niehaus each scored eight points for LCHS, as Cordrey made two 3-pointers and a two-point field goal. Niehaus was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line and made one basket from the field.
Braedon West scored three points for LCHS (a 3-pointer), and Josiah Burns also scored three points off a two-point basket and a free throw.
The Mustangs totaled seven two-point field goals, seven 3-pointers and were 8-of-13 from the free-throw line.
The loss moved the Mustangs to 5-8 overall and 2-5 in the SHAC Division I standings. The win moved Eastern to 7-1 in the SHAC Div. I standings and 11-3 overall.
