Mustangs drop season opener versus Portsmouth Trojans
Having eight hits and only one error wasn’t enough for the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs to gain a win in their season opener, falling to the visiting Portsmouth Trojans, 9-7, Monday (March 25).
LCHS gained the early 1-0 lead at the conclusion of the first inning, but the Trojans tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the second inning. The Trojans took the lead with a four-run top of the fourth inning, then they added three runs in the top of the fifth.
Lynchburg-Clay scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 8-5 deficit, and that score turned to 9-7 after Portsmouth scored a run in the top of the sixth, and LCHS scored two runs in the bottom of the same inning.
The Trojans totaled 10 hits in their win and committed three errors.
Cole Wells led LCHS at 2-for-4 with one run and one walk. Also with two hits, and leading LCHS, was Austin Bell at 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI.
Josiah Burns (one walk), Elam Faust (three RBI), Christian Flowers (two runs, two RBI, three walks), Isaac Eyre (one run) and Asher Faust (one walk) each had one hit.
Austin Bell had a double for the Mustangs, and Flowers smashed a home run in the win. Max Baker was hit by a pitch, while Cody Bell, Wells and Austin Bell each had a steal.
Caden Faust was charged with the loss after pitching 0.1 innings, as he allowed two earned runs. Wells pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, and he struck out six batters. Eyre pitched two innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits with one strikeout. Baker pitched one inning, allowing one earned run on one hit, and he collected one strikeout.
The loss sends LCHS to an 0-1 record.
