Lady Mustangs lose lead in 4th frame; fall to visiting North Adams

Facing Southern Hills Athletic Conference counterpart North Adams Thursday (Jan. 22), the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs led for three quarters and part of the fourth, but the Lady Green Devils were able to rally in the final frame to defeat LCHS, 53-47.
North Adams used a 12-3 fourth quarter to overtake the Lady Mustangs at LCHS as they trailed 44-41 going into the fourth quarter, taking the lead for good with 1:20 left on the clock at 48-47 following two free throws made by Tenzlee Burns for a 48-47 score. From there, Burns followed with a three-point play at the 35.1 mark, and then she made one final free throw with 37.5 left for the five-point Lady Green Devils’ win.
Burns led all scorers with 15 points by making two two-pointers, one 3-pointer and eight free throws, including six of their free throws in the fourth quarter, a quarter where she scored eight of her 15 points. Burns collected a double-double with 10 rebounds.
As for the start of the game the Lady Mustangs led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter with two points from Savannah Bell, four points by Joslyn Rockey, eight points by Addy Carraher (including two 3-pointers) and four points by Lily Ferguson.
LC’s second quarter was strong too, with them winning the frame by two points at 16-14 for a halftime lead of 34-28. Lynchburg-Clay’s second quarter consisted of four points off two baskets by Bell, eight points from Ferguson as she sank four two-point baskets, a 3-pointer by Ava McLaughlin and a free throw from Madison McMullen.
LCHS kept the lead after three quarters at 44-41 with a 10-point frame, though North Adams scored 13 points in the quarter. LCHS in the third had four points by McMullen as she sank two two-point buckets, one point off a free throw by Ferguson, and Rockey scored five points with two shots made from the field and one free-throw conversion.
The toughest quarter — and game-deciding eight minutes of the SHAC contest — was the fourth frame as North Adams made a comeback to win the frame 12-3 and the game by six points.
Lynchburg-Clay’s fourth-quarter scoring was two points from McMullen and one point off a free throw by Rockey.
LCHS was led in the scoring column by Ferguson with 13 points off six two-point buckets and a free throw. Rockey finished with 10 points from four two-pointers and two free-throw conversions.
LCHS also had final scoring totals as Carraher totaled eight points (two 3-pointers, one two-pointer), Bell with six points (three two-point baskets), McLaughlin with three points (one 3-pointer) and McMullen scored seven points (three two-point baskets, one free throw).
North Adams final scoring totals were: Burns (15), Jacee Davis (13), Ava Pistole (6), Emma Pistole (6), Sophia Barlow (6 points and 10 rebounds), Jaida Harrison (5) and Elizabeth Raines (2).
The win keeps North Adams in first place of the SHAC Div. I standings at 8-2 with an overall record of 10-3. Lynchburg-Clay stands at 3-7 in the SHAC Div. I standings and 5-11 overall.
Next for LCHS is an away non-conference game scheduled for Monday, Jan. 26 at Williamsburg.
