Faust, Odum send Mustangs past Unioto

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs were on a “Faust-track” on Wednesday by taking on and defeating the Unioto Shermans 3-2 at LCHS.

LC senior Elam Faust scored two of the three Mustangs goals, tying the score at 1-1, then later he scored the game-winning, go-ahead goal for the one-goal win.

Lynchburg-Clay head coach Jason West said this was a good win by his team. 

“Some of these wins … we schedule Unioto up a division, Wheelersburg is up a division, we put these games traditionally on the schedule because they have quality teams,” West said. “For us it is those validation victories, and tonight we grinded out a victory.”

Unioto (1-1-1) was first to score a goal, taking a 1-0 lead, but at the 13:55 mark the Mustangs tied the score with a goal from Faust, assisted by junior Alexander VanFleet, for a 1-1 score.

Lynchburg-Clay (3-0) took the lead with 13:16 remaining in the first half with a goal by sophomore Darryn Odum for a 2-1 lead, as again VanFleet had the assist. 

The Shermans tied the score at 2-2 with a goal at the 6:25 mark of the first half for a 2-2 score which stood at halftime. 

The second half had one goal scored, but it was the biggest of all as Faust scored the final goal of the match off a cross kick and assist from sophomore Harley Lewis, with Faust taking the pass and scoring the goal off a sliding kicking the left side of the goal with 14:48 on the clock. 

“We have taken Elam and completely flipped the field on him,” West said. “My assistant coach says (Elam) has a knack for finishing, and we are trying to work on his touch and shot.”

Lynchburg-Clay's defense held strong and fended off pressure from Unioto for the remainder of the game to seal the win. The defense consists of Wyatt Osborne, Caden Boone, Levi Fields and Linkin Barnett. At keeper was Tanner Roberts.

“We have four new starters on our backline, and they are doing a heck of a job adjusting to playing time,” West said. “The story is we are replacing nine starters from last year, and we don’t have a deep bench from last year, so those four guys in the back don't come off the field and are learning their positions as they go. They’ve stood up in the first three games, and it has been pleasant to see.” 

LCHS improves to 3-0 overall this season. Unioto moves to 1-1-1 on the season. 

Next for the Mustangs is a home non-conference contest on Saturday, Aug. 23 against Ironton St. Joseph at 11 a.m.
