Bell nets 24 in Lynchburg-Clay double-OT win

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs and the Manchester Greyhounds took each other to the brink and back, but following four regulation quarters and two overtime periods, the Mustangs stood tall as the victors, defeating the visiting Greyhounds, 62-58 Tuesday night at LCHS.

Lynchburg-Clay’s Cody Bell helped push the Mustangs to victory in a big way with a 24-point game, finishing with six 3-pointers (including four in the first half), plus he had two two-point buckets and two free throws made in overtime.

In the LCHS 12-point first quarter (they led 12-11 after the opening eight minutes), they had six points from Bell (two 3-pointers), while Trevor Niehaus had two free throws. Elam Faust scored two points off a basket, and Denver Clinton also scored two points in the opening frame with a basket.

The second quarter for LCHS saw them be outscored 13-12 by the Greyhounds, but in the 12-point second frame for Lynchburg-Clay, Bell scored eight points with two more 3-pointers and a basket from the field. Max Baker also sank a basket for two points in the second, and Niehaus made two free throws.

LCHS and Manchester were tied at 24-24 when halftime arrived, but for the third consecutive quarter the Mustangs scored another 12 points, while they held the Greyhounds to nine points for a 36-33 lead.

In the third for the home team Mustangs, they had a 3-pointer made by Bell, while Elam Faust, Clinton and Baker all added points in the quarter.

Lynchburg-Clay in the fourth frame had points scored by Bell (including his sixth 3-pointer of the game), plus points scored by Braedon West, Niehaus and Clinton. Overtime points for LCHS were scored by Asher Faust, Bell, Elam Faust and Clinton.

Final scoring totals for LCHS included Clinton with 13 points, making five two-point baskets and he was 3-of-5 from the free-throw line. Elam Faust totaled 11 points, as he made three two-point buckets, a 3-pointer and was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line.

West, Baker and Niehaus each finished the SHAC game with four points, and Asher Faust finished with two points. LCHS totaled 14 two-point baskets, seven 3-pointers and they were 13-of-23 from the free-throw line. They also had team totals that included 33 rebounds (11 offensive), nine assists, nine steals and two blocks.

The Greyhounds were led in scoring by Braylan Roberts with 18 points, followed by Braylon Rickett with 13 points, Leland Horner with 11 points and Elijah Crabtree with 11 points. Also with scoring totals in the game for the Greyhounds was Parker Hayslip with five points.

LCHS was led in rebounding by Clinton, Asher Faust and Niehaus with six rebounds each. Elam Faust and West each had five rebounds, while Bell totaled three rebounds, and Baker totaled two rebounds. LC’s assist leader was Niehaus with four, followed by West with three, and Clinton totaled two. Bell and Elam Faust led the Mustangs with three assists each, while Clinton totaled two steals, and Niehaus had one. Bell and Niehaus each collected one block.

Manchester had team totals that included 17 two-point baskets, four 3-pointers, and they were 12-of-17 from the free-throw line. MHS also finished with 30 rebounds (eight offensive), 13 assists, six steals and two blocks.

The win improves LCHS to an overall record of 4-8 with a SHAC mark (Division I) of 3-5. Manchester now stands at 5-6 overall and 1-5 in the Division II SHAC standings.
