Mustangs top Lions in regular-season non-conference game

Playing their conference rival in a non-conference game on Monday, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs won at home against the Fairfield Lions, 6-3 at Lynchburg-Clay High School. 

In a game while the Mustangs and Lions wait for tournament play, it was LCHS striking first with two runs in the bottom of the first. Fairfield scored a run in the top of the third, but Lynchburg-Clay came back with four runs in the bottom of the third for a 6-1 lead. 

Fairfield (9-17) scored two final runs in the top of the fifth inning for the final 6-3 score. The Lions finished the game with eight hits and one error. LCHS had three hits and one error. 

For the Lions, it was Caleb Rice finishing 4-for-4 with two runs and a double. Cameron Miller went 2-for-4 with a run. Ben Miller was 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. Spencer Hurless was 1-for-3. Weston Baldwin drew a walk for the Lions. 

Steals for the Lions were by Rice, Cameron Miller and Baldwin. 

Ben Miller pitched two innings for Fairfield where he allowed no hits, two earned runs and had three strikeouts. Cameron Miller pitched two innings, finishing with three strikeouts. Anderson Humphreys also pitched two innings, totaling three strikeouts and allowing no hits.

Lynchburg-Clay (19-6) had Elam Faust go 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk. Trevor Niehaus was 1-for-2 with a triple, one run, two RBI and a walk. Kristian Beachy finished 1-for-2 with a run, a home run, two RBI and a walk. 

The Mustangs also had Aric Slack force a walk, Quin Wells scored two runs, was hit by a pitch  and walked once. Teammate Harley Lewis also forced a walk. Max Baker drew a walk for LCHS, and Caden Boone also had one walk for the Mustangs. 

Steals by LCHS were made by Elam Faust (two), Owen Faust, Wells and Niehaus. 

The Mustangs on the mound had Niehaus pitch two innings, allowing no runs, no walks, two hits and he had six strikeouts. Beachy pitched two innings, allowing one earned run on two hits, a walk and he totaled five strikeouts. LCHS also had Baker pitch two innings where he had no walks and two strikeouts with two earned runs. Wells pitched one inning, allowing two hits, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts. 

Next for No. 8 seeded Fairfield is a DIvision VII SE District Quarterfinals game where they will face No. 9 seeded Racine Southern on Thursday, May 21 at FHS with a 2 p.m. start. 

No. 3 seeded Lynchburg-Clay will face No. 14 seeded Oak Hill on Thursday, May 21 at LCHS in the Division V SE District Quarterfinals at 5 p.m.
