Spruell tosses perfect game; Lady Indians defeat WCH on back-to-back days

The Hillsboro Lady Indians won on two consecutive days against a Frontier Athletic Conference rival, the Washington Lady Blue Lions. Hillsboro earned a win on the road Tuesday, followed by a home win on Wednesday, as senior pitcher Camryn Spruell pitched a perfect game in the first meeting between the two teams.
Tuesday (April 1) in Washington Court House, Spruell and the Lady Indians were dominant in every aspect of the game as they defeated the host Lady Blue Lions 18-0 in five innings, with Spruell pitching a perfect game with her catcher being Addley Miller.
In the game on Tuesday at WCH, the Lady Indians led 1-0 after the first inning with Chloe Roberts hitting a solo home run with one out, sending the ball over the left field fence.
Hillsboro added 10 runs in top of the second with Madison Dearmon hitting a two-RBI base hit to right field, scoring Addie Huff and Isabelle Brunck for a 3-0 lead. Leah Vance entered as a pinch runner for Dearmon, and Rhianna Clemons reached first on a fielder’s choice. Next, Reagan Clemons hit a bunt single to load the bases. The score went to 4-0 when Meredith Dietrick had a base hit on a bunt back to the pitcher, scoring Vance.
From there, Roberts hit her second home run of the game, this time a grand slam for an 8-0 lead, as her home run was on a 1-0 count and sailed over the left field fence for a second time.
After the first out of the inning was recorded, Miller hit a single, and she was brought home on a two-run home run over the left field fence by Huff for a 10-run advantage.
Next, Brunck took first base via an infield error, and during Dearmon’s at-bat Brunck took second, third and home on wild pitches for an 11-0 lead. Dearmon reached first with a single to left field, but the inning ended with two consecutive outs.
HHS added seven more runs in the top of the fourth, with the inning beginning as Huff hit a double, and she scored a run following a double by Brunck. Next, Dearmon took first on an error, as Brunck scored a run for a 13-0 lead for Hillsboro.
Rhianna Clemons singled, and in the next at-bat Reagan Clemons reached first base on an error, scoring Dearmon, Dietrick followed with a bunt single, and Roberts was intentionally walked with the bases loaded to score Rhianna Clemons.
HHS increased their lead to 16 runs when Spruell singled to plate Reagan Clemons. Hillsboro led 17-0 following a groundout by Miller, gaining the RBI when Dietrick scored a run. Huff advanced to first base on an error, scoring Roberts with two outs for the final 18-0 lead.
As for the perfect game in the circle, Spruell struck out the first 13 batters she faced, then gained an out on a ground ball hit to second base, The final out of the game came with another strikeout.
In five innings, Spruell in her perfect game allowed no hits, runs or walks, no errors were committed on the lone ball hit into play, and she finished the game with 14 strikeouts. Spruell threw 58 pitches, 44 for strikes.
The Lady Indians at the plate totaled 15 hits, with Roberts going 3-for-3 with three runs, two home runs, six RBI and a walk. Also, one of her hits was a double.
Huff also went 3-for-3 with a home run and a double, plus she collected three runs and two RBI.
Dietrick finished 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Dearmon ended the game at 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI.
Hillsboro also had Spruell finish 1-for-4 with one RBI, while Miller went 1-for-4 with one run, and one RBI. Brunck finished 1-for-2 with three runs, one RBI and a walk. Rhianna Clemons was 1-for-3 with two runs, and Reagan Clemons finished 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Vance finished the game with a run scored, and Emory Zornes forced a walk. Huff finished with three steals, and Brunck had one steal.

On Wednesday (April 2) Hillsboro hosted the Washington Lady Blue Lions, and the Lady Indians defeated Washington in FAC action by a 14-0 score in five innings at Hillsboro High School.
HHS scored three runs in the bottom of the first, followed with a three-run second inning. From there, the third inning consisted of seven runs for Hillsboro, and they capped off the scoring with one run in the bottom of the fourth for their 14-0 lead.
In this game, Washington had one hit leading off the top of the fifth inning, a line drive to left field. Washington ended the game with the one hit, and they committed five errors. Hillsboro collected 17 hits and had no errors.
Reagan Clemons hit two home runs in the win for Hillsboro, ending the game at 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.
Camryn Spruell finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI. Teammate Chloe Roberts was 3-for-3 with a double, three runs, a home run, three RBI and a walk.
Addley Miller finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, Addie Huff was 2-for-3 with one run, and Madison Dearmon finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Isabelle Brunck finished 1-for-3, and Rhianna Clemons was 1-for-3. The Lady Indians also had Meredith Dietrick score two runs, Harper Conrad score a run, and Rilynn Swisshelm score a run.
Finishing the games with steals were Conrad, Spruell (2), Roberts, Swisshelm and Dietrick (2).
The two wins put Hillsboro at 2-0 in the FAC and 5-1 overall.
