Indians open season at VA Memorial with loss to Waverly

Going to extra innings on Tuesday evening, the Hillsboro Indians opened their 2026 season with a non-conference loss against the Waverly Tigers by a 12-6 score at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe. 

The Indians trailed 2-0 after the first inning but gained one run back in the bottom of the second for a 2-1 score. Next, the Indians tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run. 

HHS took a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning as WHS had two runs in the top of the inning, while the Indians drove home four runs. In the top of the seventh, Waverly tied the score at 6-6, forcing extra innings as they added two runs in the top of the inning. 

In the top of the eighth, WHS broke away from the Indians — who were the home team — with six runs scored for the eventual six-run win by the Tigers. 

Waverly totaled 10 hits and had two errors, while HHS finished with eight hits and two errors. 

Zack Brown finished 3-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Indians with one of his hits being a triple. 

Brody Kelch was 2-for-4 with a double and one run, while teammate Walker Pence finished 2-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and a walk. Carter Singletary was 1-for-4 with a run. Jack Cornele was hit by a pitch and had a steal, and Von Steward hit a SAC fly.

Brayden Oberrecht had the tough-luck loss with no earned runs allowed in 1.2 innings pitched. He finished with a strikeout. 

Also pitching for HHS was Luke Holland with five strikeouts in six innings, and Pence pitched 0.1 innings with one strikeout. 

Next for the Indians is an away non-conference game Friday, April 3 at Batavia at 5 p.m.
