Hillsboro Lady Indians fall to visiting Notre Dame

Hosting the Portsmouth Notre Dame Lady Titans on Thursday (March 27), the Hillsboro Lady Indians lost their first game of the season, falling to the visitors 4-2 in their early season non-conference showdown.

Each team scored a run in the first inning, as Notre Dame (4-0) scored the first run of the game with a two-out single by Kate Entler to centerfield, scoring Maddie Entler, who also reached the bases with a single.

Hillsboro (3-1) tied the score at 1-1 with a two-out double by Addie Huff, scoring Camryn Spruell, who reached the bases with a two-out single past second base.

Both teams then were scoreless in the second, third and fourth innings, and in the top of the fifth Notre Dame added two runs, while HHS scored one run in the bottom of the inning for a 3-2 lead for NDHS.

Notre Dame’s two runs came off a two-run home run off the bat of Alayla Soard, also scoring Bella Rush, who had a lead-off single.

Hillsboro’s second run of the game came with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth by Addley Miller, who gained the RBI when Meredith Dietrick scored from third base for the 3-2 deficit.

In the top of the seventh, Notre Dame took a two-run lead with Soard scoring a run on a wild pitch with two outs.

HHS was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh inning with two strikeouts and a fly ball to right field.

For the game, the Lady Indians totaled four hits and committed one error. Notre Dame had eight hits and no errors.

Four Hillsboro players finished with one hit as Dietrick was 1-for-4 with a run, while Roberts was 1-for-4. Spruell finished 1-for-1 with one run, three steals and two walks. Huff was 1-for-3 with one RBI, while Miller totaled one RBI and two walks.

Spruell was charged with the loss in the circle, finishing with seven innings pitched, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts. She finished with 137 pitches, 86 for strikes.

Rush was the winning pitcher, also pitching all seven innings (116 pitches, 74 for strikes) allowing two earned runs on four hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts.

The loss moves Hillsboro to 3-1 overall this season, while Notre Dame improves to 4-0 overall.

Next for HHS is a Frontier Athletic Conference game Monday, March 31 at home against the visiting Washington Lady Blue Lions at Hillsboro High School.
