Fairfield battles Fayetteville in 5-set SHAC volleyball loss

In a fight for the top spot in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference Thursday night, the Fairfield Lady Lions fell in a five-set battle against rival Fayetteville at Fayetteville High School. 

The match saw Fairfield win set one at 26-24, but the Lady Rockets tied the score at 1-1 with a set-two win of 25-23. Set three went to Fayetteville with another 25-23 win. The Lady Lions came back with a set-four victory of 25-22, but the fifth set (first to 15) saw the Lady Rockets win the set at 15-04. 

For Fairfield, they had team totals of 34 kills, 34 assists, 16 aces, 73 digs and eight blocks. Fayetteville totaled 49 kills, 38 assists, 14 aces, 45 digs and 15 blocks. 

Fairfield senior Remi Moon totaled 26 kills, one ace and 25 digs. Senior Alyssa Bales finished with 28 digs and one ace. 

Senior Kinsey Drury finished with four aces and two digs. Junior Addison Cannon ended the match with one kill and four digs. Sophomore Bailey Jones ended the match with two kills, two assists and six blocks. 

Fairfield junior Jorja May had two kills, one assist, one ace, five digs and two blocks. Junior Paisley Stahlhut totaled one kill, 31 assists, two aces and seven digs. 

Senior Emma Ayres finished with one dig for Fairfield. Teammate, freshman Brynlee Barerra also had one dig. Junior Hadley Weddle collected two kills. 

Fayetteville was led in kills by juniors Tegan Combs and Ellie Shiffer each with 16, while Shiffer also led the Lady Rockets with 11 digs. Combs also led Fayetteville with six blocks. Fayetteville was led in assists by senior Maya Murphy with 37. Sophomore Alli Sams was Fayetteville’s leader in aces with eight. 

The win by the Lady Rockets moves them to 2-0 in Division II of the SHAC and 4-1 overall. Fairfield is now 1-1 in the SHAC Div. II standings and 3-1 overall. 

Fairfield was scheduled to play next on Saturday, Aug. 29 in a tri-match at McClain High School as they faced McClain and East Clinton.
