The University of Cincinnati Clermont College Art Gallery presents “Wilderness Stories,” featuring acrylic paintings by artist Jim Kaelin, through Dec. 18.
Kaelin’s work reflects his lifelong connection to the natural world and the relationships among landscapes, plants, animals and people.
“We share this amazing and unique world with so many other living things. Plants and animals all making an interwoven, interdependent tapestry of wonder and beauty on landscapes that are also alive and sentient,” Kaelin said. “We all originate from this tapestry and should embrace it as active members with respect, reverence and appreciation.”
Kaelin said he feels his best outdoors, listening to trees, watching clouds and observing sunlight move across the landscape. “It’s these things, along with the wildlife so blessed to call the outdoors home, that I attempt to preserve in paint,” he said. “Nature generously shares these moments of marvel, inviting us to slow down, appreciate and connect.”
Originally from Louisville, Ky., Kaelin relocated to Cincinnati to earn a degree in graphic design at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning. He has worked in advertising and marketing for more than 40 years. During that time, he explored acrylic painting and admired the work of other artists. Awed by nature since childhood, Kaelin uses illustration and painting to deepen his understanding and appreciation of the natural world.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and by appointment. The gallery is in the Snyder Building, Room 140. The gallery schedule is subject to change. All gallery exhibits, receptions and special events are free and open to the public.
