Team Adena helps the less fortunate

CHILLICOTHE – Talk about a return on investment!

Adena Health System donations made on behalf of Team Adena to Boy Scouts of America Troop 14 have benefitted local communities in spectacular ways – everything from painting projects to bridge building.

Employees who are part of Team Adena, like Pharmacist Mark Unger, volunteer their time to help non-profit organizations in a number of communities in southern Ohio. In return, money donations are available to the organizations from the health system.

“Our Boy Scout Troop is very appreciative of Adena's support as we strive to develop men of character by giving back to multiple groups within our community,” said the Adena pharmacist. “Over the past eight years, our troop has had more than 10 Eagle scouts, all whom have completed projects to benefit the community,” he said.

For example, Scout Douglas French built a brick grotto at St. Peter Catholic Church to house a statue that was obtained from an abandoned church in Cleveland. The teenager oversaw the raising of more than $5,000, the laying of brick and the final placement of the statue of Mary.

Meanwhile, Ethan Cutright last summer constructed a bridge to replace a heavily damaged structure in Tar Hollow State Park. Other projects by the troop include work at the Chillicothe High School, First Presbyterian Church, Knights of Columbus and Police Athletic League.

“We have also completed two mission trips to the Dominican Republic to help build housing for the underserved in the small village of Pueblo Nueva near Luperon,” Unger said.

Team Adena is a corporate-giving program launched in 1999 as a community and employee benefit. Team Adena members donate time to voluntary projects of their choice. Members report their volunteer hours every six months and the health system donates money based on hours of service.

Team Adena members volunteered more than 8,000 hours last year, helping non-profit organizations in a number of communities in southern Ohio, according to Peggy Depugh-Landrum, BSN, RN, and Adena’s Community Benefit Coordinator.

“Unlike other kinds of giving programs, Team Adena members donate time to voluntary projects of their choice oftentimes in the communities in which they live,” she said.
