State regent speaks at March 3 DAR meeting

The Waw-wil-a-way Chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) began its year on March 3 with the honor of special guest State Regent Nancy Schirm Wright. In addition to Wright, 22 members, three prospective members and one guest were present at the event, held at the Hillsboro First Presbyterian Church.
After a delicious luncheon provided by hostesses Susan Parker, Joan Gale and Jane Stowers, Wright presented “How Does Your Garden Grow,” detailing the history of the service DAR has provided since it was founded in Washington D.C. in 1890. The three objectives of the DAR are historic preservation, education and patriotism.

DAR members provide time and money to restore historical sites, placing monuments around the world to memorialize people and events throughout American history, preserving genealogical records, artifacts and historical documents, available to the public at the DAR headquarters in Washington D.C.
DAR supports six schools through chapter and member donations as well as time and provides scholarships and funds to Native American children and schools.
Members provide more than 200,000 hours of volunteer time annually to veterans’ hospitals and in various local activities. DAR offers support to America’s service personnel and their families. Locally, members provide recognition for DAR Good Citizens and Junior American Citizens.
Wright presented the Thatcher Award and pin to Sarah Jacobs, the daughter of Kimberly and Dennis Jacobs. She has served as president of the “Buckley Eaglets” for the past five years and has presented programs and participated in many community and veterans events. Jacobs is a mature JAC (Junior American Citizens) member who has shown outstanding leadership, dedication and service.
The business meeting followed with reports from committees and approving new chapter bylaws.
The April 7 meeting will be at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. with this year’s Youth Awards. Hostesses are Charleene Tarr, Helen Roe and Cara Pfeifer.
