Revolutionary War Soldiers Series: Remembering John Allen

John Allen was in 1754 in Augusta County, Virginia. He died March 9, 1846 in Highland County, Ohio.

He is buried in Highland County; his gravesite is not known.

He is not listed on the plaque on the Highland County Courthouse nor is he listed in the NSDAR database.

From "Wills, Administrations, Guardianships and Adoptions of Highland County, Ohio" by David N. & Jane McBride, Page 165, on April 14, 1846: Ira Horton was appointed administrator of the estate of John Allen, dec'd. Sureties were Jacob Horton and Samuel Johnson, and appraisers were John Hensell, Robert Elwood and Jordan Davis.

Common Pleas Court Records of Highland County, Ohio, 1805-60, by David N. McBride, Page 22: "This day it was proved to the satisfaction of the Court that John Allen at the time of his death was a pensioner of the United States at the rate of $80 per annum; that he died on the 9th day of March, 1846. That he left no widow, that he left Hannah Myres late Hannah Allen and John R. Allen (whose residence is unknown) and the unknown heirs of Fielding Allen, deceased; Mary Branson, the late Mary Allen, as his only heirs and representatives which is ordered to be certified and that he died in said county of Highland. Order Book No. 9, 1845-1849, Page 234, March 1847.

Note: The only known child that was located was Mary (Polly) Allen born 1785, in Highland County, Ohio. She married Jacob Branson on Dec. 25, 1809, in Highland County. She died in 1827 in Delaware County, Indiana.
