Native American dolls program to be held at library

Local author Gretchen Huffman will present a program highlighting ten handmade Native American dolls at the Hillsboro library on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
Huffman said that the dolls were made by one of her mother's best friends, Josephine (Mrs. Homer) Williams, of New Vienna.

“She made them after much research,” Huffman said. “They are very intricate.”
Among the several tribes represented among the dolls are the Navajo, Cherokee and Pueblo. The dolls are currently on display in the Hillsboro library's teen section and are accompanied by photographs and information about each tribe.
During her upcoming presentation, Huffman will discuss those tribes. Much of the information, she said, comes from the National Geographic book “Trails of Tears and Paths of Beauty” by Joseph Bruchac.
The program will be held in the downstairs meeting room. There is no charge.
Huffman is the author of “On the Inside, Looking Out,” a collection of poems. Last year, she held a book signing at the library.
