The Lynchburg Lions Club recently hosted a special program for all fifth graders at the Lynchburg-Clay Elementary School. Mr. Ron Derry from the Columbus area presented an excellent motivational program. Mr. Derry, who is blind, conducted a general assembly program for all of the students and then spent 30 minutes in each of the five fifth-grade classrooms. During that time, he had the students work with special calculators, which he taught them to use without sight.
Mr. Derry is a Lions member, and he has developed this program since he became blind. Prior to becoming blind, he served as a schoolteacher. The GOOD program (Going On Or Defeated) encourages youth to work hard and focus on positive behavior even when the going gets tough. Two students in each class section were selected by their teachers to receive special GOOD T-shirts at the end of the school year. The 10 winners were selected based upon their attitude, behavior, and progress toward doing as well as they could in school. The Lynchburg Lions Club and the Lynchburg-Clay School District co-sponsored the GOOD program and shared the expenses.
