CHILLICOTHE - Is your child worried about his or her weight? Are you worried about your child’s weight?
Because weight can play a huge factor in the health of young people, and how they are treated by others, Adena Health System is offering a special program designed for children who are searching for healthy ways to shed pounds.
“KidShape was an awesome experience,” said Evan King, a past participant. “The program changed my eating habits and fitness level, and the staff is very supportive and friendly.”
The next session of KidShape begins Wednesday, Sept. 14, in the PACCAR Medical Education Center, on the campus of the Adena Medical Center. Classes are held each Wednesday for eight weeks. The registration deadline is Sept. 9.
KidShape is a fun-filled program that starts children and their families on a lifetime journey of health and confidence. Developed through the KidShape Foundation, a national, non-profit organization, the program produces scientifically proven successful results, according to Cathy Castillo, RD, LD, an Adena dietitian.
Classes are divided into three major parts. A registered dietician teaches adults and children together about the healthy way to eat and lose weight. Adults and children meet separately with a mental health professional to discuss changing old habits and adopting new and healthy habits.
Finally, adults have an opportunity to ask more specific questions, while kids participate in fun aerobic exercise. During two of the eight weeks, adults exercise with kids.
“One in three children in Ohio is obese by the age of eight,” Castillo said. “What KidShape provides to children and their families is an opportunity to learn about ways to lose weight in a healthy manner through nutrition, exercise and behavior modification.”
Castillo said 87 percent of KidShape participants lose weight and 80% of participants keep the weight off after two years.
”Children with weight problems increase their risk of a number of health conditions, such as asthma, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, fatty liver and Type 2 diabetes, in addition to self-esteem issues. We certainly hope parents or guardians in our community will take advantage of this program if they have a child who could benefit,” she said.
To receive a registration form, or to obtain more information, call 740-779-7520, or visit the Dietician Office on the second floor of the North Wing in the Adena Medical Center.
Thanks to a grant from Adena Health Foundation, cost for the program is $50, which is reduced from the usual $150 fee. Children between the ages of six and 14 are eligible to register, and a family member must attend with the child.
