Home Helpers provides ideas for capturing holiday memories with aging loved ones

As the holiday season approaches, Home Helpers of Hillsboro, a senior care franchise specializing in non-medical and personal in-home care and companionship services, is offering a list of holiday activities for area families to share with the senior citizens in their lives.

The holidays bring about family get-togethers, dinners and out-of-town visits, as well as a chance to share quality time with aging loved ones. Home Helpers offers tips for those who are “Home for the Holidays” to engage in activities with aging family members to both share old memories and create new ones.

“Families have a tendency to plan events that are focused on the younger generations and find it difficult to come up with activities that they feel their parents or grandparents will enjoy,” said Janet Dean, owner of Home Helpers of South Central Ohio, adding that seniors are increasingly susceptible to depression during the holidays. “As a result, families may miss out on a great opportunity to engage and interact with aging family members.”

Here are five suggestions for activities to share with the seniors in your life this holiday season:

• Cook a favorite meal together/Create a family cookbook: Talk to your loved ones about their favorite holiday meals growing up. Use old family recipes, if possible, and share memories of the occasions where the meal was served in the past. Use those family recipes to create a family cookbook.

• Decorate for the holidays: Spread holiday cheer by hanging wreaths, stringing popcorn and trimming the tree or lighting the menorah. Often, decorations have a specific meaning or story to tell. If you are decorating a senior citizen’s home, make sure someone is also available to help take down the decorations in the coming weeks.

• Play board games or card games: Gather the family together to play a game of Scrabble, Go Fish or other family-friendly game. Settle in with popcorn and hot cider or tea and enjoy each other’s company for the afternoon.

• Create a scrapbook: Look through old photos from past holiday gatherings. Pick out your favorites and use festive papers and other craft supplies to create a holiday-themed memento.

• Send out holiday cards: Turn on the holiday music and start spreading holiday cheer both within and outside of your family. Together you can create a list of holiday card recipients, hand sign cards and address the envelopes. You may even choose to enclose a family photo.

As a company that works with senior citizens on a daily basis, Home Helpers understands that hectic schedules make it hard for families to spend time with their aging loved ones on a daily basis. Home Helpers is dedicated to bringing families together this holiday season and ensuring that senior citizens, no matter the age, can participate in any type of holiday activities.

Home Helpers provides senior companionship and in-home care services year-round.
