Hillsboro Garden Club readies for Highland County Fair

By Jennifer West
Hillsboro Garden Club

The Hillsboro Garden Club members gathered to prepare Floral Hall for the fair next month.  After enjoying a meal of pizza and a lemonade bar, President Lynn Luman called the August meeting to order. Club members were sorry to learn of the passing of Mary Smith, a long time Hillsboro Garden Club member. She will be missed.

The roll call question was "name a favorite garden you have visited or would like to visit."  Fourteen members were present.

The tip of the month was "plant carrots in January and you'll never have to eat carrots".

Assistant Treasurer Cindy Roche' presented the treasurer's report which was accepted.

Judith Stivender presented her horticultural exhibit – a stalk of Cyperus Papyrus and a specimen of paper made from flattened papyrus. Cyperus Papyrus was used by ancient Egyptians to make one of the world's first types of paper as well as rope, mats and sandals.

Lynn passed the Fair Guard Duty sheet around again. Members will be in Floral Hall during the fair to answer any questions visitors may have.

The nominees for the 2026 landscaping awards were reconsidered. After discussion, Lynn moved and Larry Moore seconded a motion to accept the seven nominees. All were in favor.

Members David Inlow and Amanda Robertson have begun cleaning up the garden at the front of the Floral Hall building. Next spring they will do more extensive planting.

The meeting was then adjourned. Be sure to visit Floral Hall during the fair to see the 3 flower shows presented each year.
