Hillsboro Garden Club convenes for April meeting
The April 2026 meeting of the Hillsboro Garden Club was called to order by President Lynn Luman who introduced new member Janet Fair. The club was saddened to learn of the passing of Carol Gorby, a long-time club member and past club president. Carol will be greatly missed.
The roll call question was "what is your favorite spring wildflower?" There were many interesting responses.
Seventeen members and 11 guests were present.
The gardening tip was: "the philosopher who said that work well done never needs doing over never weeded a garden" (Ray Everson).
Treasurer Ruth Anna Duff gave her report which was accepted.
There was a request for volunteers to help plan a proposed open garden show to be held later in the year. This show will be similar to the one presented at the Highland County Fair each year on the Wednesday of fair week.
Club member Mary Smith will no longer be able to attend meetings. A motion was made by Connie Hilliard for the club to pay her annual dues in recognition of Mary's long service to the club and the community. The motion was seconded and passed. We will miss seeing Mary at the meetings.
Judith Stivender updated the members on the OAGC 2026 State Convention at Deer Creek Lodge. Region 16 will be hosting the convention. Club members are to meet at Moore's garden store to prepare table settings which will be transported to the lodge in June.
The OAGC Board is asking each Region 16 club to donate an item valued at $35. Lynn will take care of this.
The meeting was adjourned and we enjoyed a light meal provided by Cindy Roche' and Betty Ann Walker before the Spring Auction began. Auctioneers Larry Moore and Shelly Rayburn kept the plants moving, assisted by Avacyn Frances and Jennifer West. It was quite an evening, and we had many guests and visitors eager to bid.
The next garden club meeting will be Mary 26 at Floral Hall on the county fairgrounds. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. and all gardeners are invited to attend.
