Garden Club returns from winter hiatus

After a two-month winter break, the Hillsboro Garden Club returned to their monthly meeting schedule on Tuesday, March 22, with 22 members and associates in attendance with high hopes for the return of spring.
The meeting was called to order by President Nancy Baldwin, the December minutes were read by Dena Benner, and the club recognized member participants for their award-winning "Going to Grandma's" entry in the holiday parade. Dena Benner reported on OAGC news and noted that reservations for the Spring Regional meeting in Wilmington must be received by April 1.
As hosts for the spring regional meeting in 2012, club members were invited to offer fundraising ideas to help cover costs. Nancy Sonner offered the gift of a flower-themed, custom-designed, hand-pieced, appliquéd and hand-quilted double coverlet that she made over the winter as a raffle item, which was accepted with enthusiasm.
After brief discussion, the club voted to hold the meeting at Ponderosa and chose "Can Dew It!" as the 2011 regional theme, with watering cans as table decorations. Committee members were announced. Incoming president Larry Moore will preside and welcome the visiting club members of eight local garden clubs.
Ruth Anna Duff gave the treasurer's report and reminded members that next month's April 26 meeting is the annual plant and garden sale. Members were encouraged to bring guests, plants, seeds, garden items and spending money, since the spring sale is the club's primary fundraiser and the Regional conference may have unexpected expenses to be covered.
Highland County Fair Chairman Rose Marie Cowdrey announced that this year's specimen choice for the Junior Division is Zinnia Queen Lime. Garden Club members may plant Zinnia Red Lime and The Bride, a white coneflower. She was also responsible for the evening's fabulous Fuji mum creative flower arrangement.
Gloria Wright introduced the evening's speaker, Linda Seal, an accomplished flower photographer who has traveled to gardens all across the US and Canada to capture perfect pictures of flowers, gardens and garden wildlife. Her PowerPoint presentation, "Images in the Garden," included 78 slides of her personal photos and was followed with the specific guidelines and elements she uses to create great floral photography. She stressed that early morning and late afternoon provided the optimal conditions for great shots and proved, with stunning examples, that taking pictures in the rain may offer the best of all options for great pictures. Many of the amazing photos were taken at the Cincinnati Zoo during tulip season.
