First baby born in Adena's new women and children's center

CHILLICOTHE - Little Elijah Zachariah Carroll may not know it yet, but he already has made history at Adena Health System.
He is the first baby born in Adena’s new Women and Children’s Center, the cornerstone of the $45.5 million Northeast Expansion. As a matter of fact, Elijah was being delivered Monday just as the new center was officially opening, as patients and equipment were being transferred from the old center to the new one.
“They were unpacking things as I walked into the labor and delivery room,” said Brigitte Clary, Elijah’s mother.
“Even during the move, they still just carried on like everything was perfect. It was really nice,” said Brigitte, who praised the staff for its professionalism. “I mean nothing was a problem, at all.”
Jackie Stansberry, Director of the Women and Children’s Center, said Brigitte’s arrival in the center couldn’t have been more interesting.
She arrived as the old Women and Children’s Center was closing for business and the new center was officially opening on the first floor of the Northeast Expansion.
“I was overwhelmed by just walking into a room and seeing nurses putting things together to get it ready for me to deliver,” said Brigitte, of Richmondale.
Elijah’s father, Zachary Carroll, said he didn’t know what to think seeing people and equipment everywhere. Both said they couldn’t believe how everyone dropped what they were doing to help them.
“I was very impressed with the staff. They were very apologetic about the circumstances and very professional. And amazing!” Brigitte added.
Although the couple had hoped to have their baby delivered in the new center, neither expected to be the first.
“This is amazing what they’ve done here, and it’s a lot more family friendly” Brigitte said.
Along with much larger rooms in the new center, there’s much more space for families to visit, she added. Both of their families visited Monday night, without difficulty. And Zachary slept overnight in the room on the sofa bed, one of which is provided in each patient room.
Elijah, who was born at 5:26 p.m. Monday weighing 7 pounds 13 ounces, and 21 inches long, was delivered without a problem.
The new Women and Children’s Center houses a special labor triage area, advanced labor and delivery rooms, C-section suites, post-partum rooms, a well-baby nursery and pediatric inpatient beds.
Additionally, a Level II nursery will provide care for babies who require close observation or extra help after birth. A women’s surgical unit and 8-bed pediatric surgical unit also are housed in the center.
The move to the new center is complete and it is operational.
Adena Health System is an independent, not-for-profit and locally controlled healthcare organization serving the needs of 10 counties in south-central Ohio and employing more than 2,000 people. Adena provides specialty services typically found in larger medical centers, like open heart surgery, cardiac catheterization, cancer care and advanced orthopedic procedures, including reverse shoulder surgery, total joint replacement and minimally invasive spine surgery. The health system is based in Chillicothe.
