contest deadline Aug. 4
The Highland County Shepherd’s Club will be sponsoring the Highland
County Lamb and Wool Queen, Princess contest on Aug 11. Any interested
applicants may pick up an application at the Highland County Extension
Office.
The deadline for the application is Aug. 4. The applicant must be a
sheep exhibitor at the Highland County Fair and be 4-H age. For information,

Farm Service Agency seeks
committee candidates
The Farm Service Agency (FSA) is looking for candidates for the FSA
County Committee election to be held this November, according to Jim Patton,
director of the Highland County FSA Office.
FSA elections will be conducted in Local Administrative Area (LAA) No.
2, which includes the townships of Dodson, Salem, Hamer, New Market, Clay,
and Whiteoak. Highland County is divided into three areas for determining
FSA committee representation. The FSA County Committee is made up of three
members, one from each area, serving 3-year, alternating terms. Farm
operators or owners who live in the above townships are encouraged to file a
nominating petition by the Aug. 2 deadline.
The FSA Committee is a vital link in the effective administration of
Federal Farm Programs in Highland County. Regular meetings are held to make
policy decisions on program implementation, and to act on cases involving
individual farmer participation.

SATH Car and Bike Show Aug. 1
at Rocky Fork Lake State Park
The 16th annual SATH Car and Bike Show at Rocky Fork Lake State Park is
Aug. 1 at the Rocky Fork State Park campgrounds, off of North Shore Drive in
Hillsboro. The show will be a top 40 show, with trophies for the top car,
top truck, and top bike. Additionally, five different choice awards and five
special awards will be presented that day. Registration will be from noon to
3 p.m., with trophies at 4 p.m. Dash plaques will be given to the first 75
participants. The cost is $75 per vehicle. But this event is not just for
car lovers – booths and games will also be set up. For more information,

Palmetto State Quartet
concert Aug. 1 at
Good Shepherd Church
The Palmetto State Quartet will be at Good Shepherd Church, Greenfield, on
Sunday, Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m. There also will be pies, ice cream, and other
deserts for sale from 4-6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. A love offering will
be taken. Pastor Mike Anderson and the congregation welcome everyone to come
out and enjoy this great concert.
Hillsboro Swim Club
offers ‘5 after 5’
Due to the intense heat this summer, the Hillsboro Swim Club is opening
their pool to the public for a “5 after 5” deal. Non-members wishing to use
the pool can swim after 5 p.m. for $5 per person. The pool is open until 8
p.m. (weather permitting), and snacks and drinks are available for purchase.

Free meal in Greenfield
The monthly free meal at the Greenfield Methodist Church will be held on
Saturday, July 31, from 4-5:30 p.m. The menu will be pulled pork, potato
salad, fresh vegetables and fruits.

5K, 10K run Aug. 14
The HillJam Mpact Run, a 5K/10K that benefits Mission Pact (MPACT), will
be held Saturday, Aug. 14 at 6643 Ervin Road, Hillsboro. Registration begins
at 7:30 a.m., with the race starting at 9 a.m. MPACT, a local nonprofit
organization with a “mission to provide a cleaner tomorrow,” has joined
forces with World Vision to ensure that people lacking basic sanitation,
both in the U.S. and overseas, are able to receive critically needed hygiene
products.

ice cream social Aug. 14
The Hardins Creek Friends ice cream social date has been changed from
the middle of July to Saturday, Aug. 14 with serving beginning at 5 p.m.
Enjoy all the delicious homemade foods: noodles, chicken, and BBQ pork
sandwiches, salads, pies, cakes, and top it off with homemade ice cream.
Freewill donations accepted. The church is located at the corner of S.R. 771

Sons of the American Revolution
to pay tribute to William Higgins July 31
The Sons of the Revolution, along with members of the Higgins family
will honor William Higgins, a Highland County Revolutionary War soldier who
is buried in Prospect Cemetery, during a graveside
ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 31.
The public is invited to this patriotic ceremony honoring a man who
fought for our American freedom, said John F. Higgins of Lincoln, Neb., a
great-great-great-great-great-grandson of William and Margaret
Higgins.
New Market School Reunion
Aug. 7 at Hopewell Center
The New Market School Reunion will be held Saturday, Aug. 7 at 4 p.m. at

New Vienna United
Methodist Church hosts concert
The New Vienna United Methodist Church will host gospel singing artists
Beyond The Ashes on Friday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. Doors will open at 5 p.m.
The New Vienna United Methodist will also hold its 10th annual joint
chicken barbecue and car show on Saturday, Aug. 7. The dinner will be served
from 11 a.m. to 4 pm. The cost is $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for
children, which includes 1/2 chicken two sides, dessert and beverage. For

Greenfield Mother’s
Club scholarship offered
The Greenfield Mother’s Club is offering a continuing education
scholarship in the amount of $500. Applicants must be a graduate of McClain
High School, be enrolled as a full time student, have a GPA of 2.5 or
better, and be ranked as at least a sophomore. Applications can be picked up
in the McClain High School guidance office.
New Directions
open for summer
New Directions is now open for the summer. All students in grades 7-12
are invited to SOULFIRE every Thursday night from 7-9 p.m. at the New
Directions Youth Center, 251 Jefferson St. in downtown Greenfield. For more

55th annual
CAMP Aug. 1-7
The 55th annual C.A.M.P. (Constructing Assured & Motivated People) will
be held the week of Aug. 1-7 at the Resident Camping Facility at Tar Hollow
State Park.
The cost is $215 per camper thanks to a 100 percent volunteer staff. The
fee covers all costs while at camp. Families with two or more youngsters
coming to camp receive a $10 discount on each camper’s fee.
