Register now for Hillsboro Uptown
Business Association Snowflake Pageant
Registration is now open for the second annual Hillsboro Uptown Business
Association Snowflake Pageant and are being accepted through Nov. 12. The
pageant is open to residents of Ohio. Winners must attend this year’s parade
and crown next year’s winners. The decision of the judges is final. No flip
flops are to be worn. Applicants must be unmarried and cannot have children.
The Tiny Miss age group is 6 months – 3 years. Parents are permitted
onstage with their child. They will only have to walk onstage, and the emcee
will introduce them. A formal gown is required. Make-up will not be
permitted to be worn by the contestants in the Tiny Miss age group.
The Sweetheart age group is 4 – 7 year olds. Contestants are required to
introduce themselves and answer an onstage question. Introduction will be to
say their name and age. A formal gown is required. Make-up will not be
permitted to be worn by the contestants in the Sweetheart age group.
For the Princess (8-12 year-olds), Queen (13-18 year-olds) and Miss
(19-22 year-olds) categories, contestants are required to give a one-minute
introduction about themselves, answer onstage questions and perform a talent
that is no longer than two minutes. A full-length formal gown is required.
The pageant will be held Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. All contestants are required
to attend a rehearsal the same day at 1 p.m.
National Collection Week
for shoe box gifts Nov. 14-21
Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, a project of international
Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse
(www.samaritanspurse.org), headed by Franklin Graham, has hand-delivered
more than 85 million gift-filled shoe boxes to needy children in some 130
countries. The National Collection Week for shoe box gifts is Nov. 14-21.

Hillsboro mayor
plans veterans tribute
Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink is organizing a tribute for veterans of the
U.S. Armed Forces so that residents of Hillsboro can have a chance to thank
them for their services to the nation and community.
“December 7, 2011 marks the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor,” Zink
said. “We will be holding a veterans recognition day at Hillsboro High
School to honor all veterans of Hillsboro and Highland County. The program
will start at 7 p.m.”
Arrangements on the program have not been completed, he said, but should
be finalized by the November council meeting. The mayor said that he is
working with Hillsboro City Schools Superintendent Rick Earley and the
director of the high school band.
“We’re looking forward to being able to honor all the veterans of
Highland County,” Zink said. Zink encouraged anyone with ideas for the

Edgewood Manor
offers Medicare help
Edgewood Manor of Greenfield will offer assistance with Medicare Part D
prescription plans every Wednesday from 1-4 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to
noon during the enrollment period through Dec. 7. Bring a copy of your

Christmas at the Cabin
Janny Brizius has announced seasonal hours for Christmas at the Cabin,
located on Cave Road east of Hillsboro. The cabin, which is stuffed with
hand-crafted wares from numerous artisans – both local and across the
country – features clothing, jewelry, household wares, dolls and toys,
special holiday decorations and more. The cabin will be open from 10 a.m.-5

Fire District in Mowrystown
The Southern Highland Joint Fire District located in Mowrystown will be
having its annual spaghetti dinner on Nov. 19 from 4-8 p.m., for donations
only. There will be a raffle, and anyone wanting to donate a item for the
raffle can call the fire department at 937-442-1170. Funds raised will go to
help out with the special things the volunteer firemen and EMTs do
throughout the year (blankets or coats for a family that has been burned out
of their home; a present for a child for Christmas; a stuffed animal for a
child; fire safety supplies; cases of water; or educational supplies.) The
dinner will be at the Mowrystown Firehouse at 50 Maple St.

Craft Bazaar from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m., featuring items from a variety of vendors

The Lynchburg-Clay Veterans Day program will be held Nov. 11 at the high

will be provided from 8-9 a.m., and the program will begin at 9 a.m. Both
past and present veterans will be recognized. The first row of the
Lynchburg-Clay High School staff and student parking lot will be reserved
for veterans.

Community Action
Christmas program
Highland County Community Action Organization, Inc. (HCCAO) has opened
its annual Community Christmas Program for applications and donations.
Applications will be accepted through Nov. 18. The program seeks to match
eligible needy families and children with existing community programs and
private donors, as well as ensuring all needy children receive holiday gifts
this season. HCCAO works to reduce the duplication of services by partnering
with Community Christmas providers to ensure that more children are served
and decreasing the incidence of multiple program access wherever possible in
order to increase each program's capacity to serve the community and its
children in need. Interested programs, donors and applicants can contact

St. Mary Catholic School

SATH Turkey Bingo Nov. 19
at Hillsboro Elementary School
SATH is holding its ninth annual Turkey Bingo. Thanksgiving is just
around the corner and SATH has the event for your holiday. Play Turkey Bingo
with SATH and win a turkey or maybe even Thanksgiving dinner. Bingo will
begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19 at a new location, the Hillsboro
Elementary School cafeteria.
During the night, 25 turkeys will be given away. The evening’s event
will end with a game of coverall in which the winner gets a complete
Thanksgiving dinner. The cost will be a donation of 25 cents per card.
Prior to Bingo, at 5 p.m. they will be having a soup supper to kick off
the evening. There will be homemade chicken and noodles, chili, beans and
cornbread and lots of delicious desserts.

The Lynchburg-Clay FFA Chapter will sponsor its annual consignment

Appreciation Day Nov. 20
The Highland County Deer Hunters Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited will
sponsor the second annual Youth Hunter Appreciation Day on Sunday, Nov. 20
from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Holtfield Station in Hillsboro. All activities are
free and include lunch, archery shooting, door prizes, big buck contest,
field dressing demonstration and a grand prize drawing. Youth hunters who
have harvested a deer during the 2011 season should bring their permanent

Banquet Nov. 26
The Highland County Deer Hunters will host the annual Whitetails
Unlimited Banquet on Nov. 26 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church Assembly

silent auction, gun raffles, door prizes and a buffet meal by Ponderosa
Catering. Money raised at the event will benefit local wildlife conservation
