McClain class of 1986
to hold 25-year reunion
The McClain High School Class of 1986 will be holding their 25-year
reunion the weekend of Greenfield’s Homecoming.
On Friday, Oct. 14, the class will meet at the Homecoming football game
at 7 p.m. then enjoy a bonfire after the game at an alumni home.
On Saturday, Oct. 15, the class will gather at the VFW, 12868 Watt Road,
Greenfield, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. for the reunion and dance. Appetizers, tea
and lemonade will be provided. The cost is $10 per person at the door.
Classmates/guests/other 1980s era alums are all welcome. And, as always, all
our former teachers are welcome free-of-charge.

Kelch family reunion Oct. 9
The 29th annual Kelch family reunion will be Sunday, Oct. 9, with lunch
beginning at 1 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish and their
own table service.
The reunion will be held at the Sardinia Legion Hall on College Avenue
in Sardinia.

Cape May sponsors
music celebration Oct. 8
Cape May Retirement Village and Wilmington College will be holding the
second annual Church Music celebration on Saturday, Oct. 8 at The Boyd
Cultural Arts Center at 7 p.m. The community is invited to join us for a
night filled with song and praise. This year, Grow Food, Grow Hope will be
the recipient of all donations from the event. Grow Food, Grow Hope is a
nationally acclaimed program affiliated and managed through Wilmington
College that teaches and helps families to grow their own gardens and how to
care for the garden. This program also helps seniors and others who may not
be able to till and plant by doing some of the physical work for them,
allowing them to have fresh produce from their own gardens. Growing your own
food empowers everyone to have the freshest possible fruits and vegetables
without the large costs associated with purchase.
Church Choirs and praise bands will provide an uplifting and
entertaining evening. The event will be arranged and orchestrated by Steven
Haines and Liz Haskins with support from Becky Haines and Wynn Alexander.
There is no fee for admission. Donations will be accepted during the

Public Employee Retirees Inc.
to meet Oct. 13
The Highland County Chapter of the Public Employee Retirees Inc., will meet Oct. 13 at the Highland County Senior Citizen Center at 10 a.m. Aristotle Hutras, director of the Ohio Retirement Study Council will be the speaker. For information, call 393-2190.
Countywide curfew
in effect Oct. 1-31
A countywide curfew is in effect for the month of October for all
persons under the age of 18. The curfew will run through Oct. 31 and require
all persons under the age of 18 to be off the streets and in their homes by
10 p.m., Monday through Thursday and midnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The curfew does not apply where children are accompanied by parents,
legal guardians or custodians. Exception is also made for children attending
church, school or employment activities. Enforcement will be handled by
all law enforcement agencies, including the sheriff’s department, city or
village police and juvenile probation officers. After consultation with law
enforcement, it is requested that each jurisdiction set beggars night on
Thursday, Oct. 27 from 6-8 p.m.

Oct. 15 in Carmel
The Carmel Church of God will host a harvest party on Oct. 15 from
noon-4 p.m. at 5554 Carmel Road, east of Hillsboro. There will be a bonfire,
hayrides, games, food and trunk-or-treat. Everyone is welcome. For

The Hillsboro Area Branch of the American Association of University
Women, in conjunction with WVNU-FM and The Highland County Press, will hold
the annual AAUW Candidates and Issues Forum 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10 at Southern
State Community College’s Central Campus in Hillsboro.
Hillsboro mayoral candidates Drew Hastings (Republican) and John Levo
(Independent) will be invited to the 2011 forum, as will speakers for and
against the repeal of Ohio Senate Bill 5 and any other candidates in locally
contested races of general interest.

Funds sought for
Veterans Memorial
The Highland County Commissioners and the VFW are placing a Veterans
Memorial on the Highland County Courthouse lawn. In order to raise the
money, they will put any veteran’s name on a brick for $50. All Highland
County veterans are eligible. The committee will also accept donations. Any
veteran who wants to buy a brick may contact the VFW at 393-0211 or call

Hospice of Hope
Ohio Valley offers
vacation raffle
Hospice of Hope Ohio Valley has several fundraisers throughout the year
which help provide quality hospice care. They will be raffling a
seven-day/six-night vacation to Ellington Plantation in Myrtle Beach for the
week of Nov. 20-27. Tickets are $10 each and only 500 will be sold. The
winning raffle ticket will be awarded on Oct. 28. For more information, call

Highland Soil & Water
Conservation District’s
annual meeting Oct. 13
The Highland Soil & Water Conservation District’s 69th annual meeting
will be held on Oct. 13, at the Highland County Training and Employment
Center (Hi-TEC) located at 1575 N. High Street in Hillsboro from 5-7 p.m.
The Highland SWCD will be hosting a social gathering with light refreshments
being served. Various events will be held throughout the evening including
the Supervisor election from 5-6:30 p.m., a silent auction to benefit
conservation programs and the presentation of awards is scheduled to begin
at 6:30 p.m.
Two supervisors will be elected to serve a three-year term. Jeff Boike,
Nathan Brown and Jeff Duncan are the candidates on the ballot. You may vote
on the evening of the annual meeting or by requesting the proper absentee
ballot forms from the Highland SWCD office at (937) 393-1922, ext. 3.

Church Women United
host Crop Walk Oct. 8
Highland County Church Women United is holding its 2011 Crop Walk on
Saturday, Oct. 8 (rain date Oct. 15) at 2 p.m. The group will meet at
Liberty Park in Hillsboro.
Hungry people in developing countries typically walk as many as six
miles a day to get food, water and fuel, and to take their goods to market.
The group will walk to be in solidarity with their struggle for existence.

The Belfast Charge of the UMC will host CPR (Christ Provides Renewal) on
Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. at the Belfast United Methodist
Church. Dr. Randy Stearns will be the guest speaker on Friday evening. Dr.
Stearns is a former pastor of the Belfast Charge
and is now an assistant to the Bishop. Special music for the evening will be

rummage sale Oct. 8
St. Mary's Episcopal Church will hold their fall rummage sale Saturday,
Oct. 8 at the parish house from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The church is located at 234

Brushcreek Community Center
hosts Octoberfest Oct. 8
The Brushcreek Community Center (Sinking Spring gym) will host
Octoberfest on Oct. 8. Dinner will include homemade chicken and noodles,
chili, barbecue, hot dogs, homemade desserts and drinks and will begin at 5
p.m. A masquerade contest for all ages will begin at 7 p.m. with a cake and
pie auction immediately following. There will also be game booths.
Marshall School Committee
Fall Fun-Fest Oct. 15
The Marshall School Committee will host the third annual Fall Fun-Fest
at the Marshall School Gymnasium, Saturday, Oct. 15 from 4-7 p.m. Carnival
games, grocery bingo, popcorn, cotton candy, cake walks and a
50/50 raffle will be enjoyed. Admission is free for all ages. A costume
contest will begin at 6 p.m. Game tickets are $.25 each or five for $1.
Photos will be available at the costume shop. Chicken and noodles, sloppy
joes, coneys, potato salad, baked beans, chips, homemade pies, apple cider
and drinks will be available for a free-will donation. All proceeds will be
used for the renovation and upkeep of the Marshall School Gymnasium. For

Residential tire collection
Highland County Recycling, through the Ross, Pickaway, Highland, Fayette
Solid Waste Management District, has received a grant for residential tire
collection. This tire collection collects tires from the public at a reduced
cost.
Tires are collected during a local event and picked up by Liberty Tire
Recycling of Columbus. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8
at the Hillsboro City Garage from 9 a.m. until noon.
Passenger and light truck tires will be accepted at the cost of only 50
cents apiece. The last time this type of tire collection was held was in
March 2009. At that time, more than 3,500 tires were collected.

Boofest 2011 set for Oct. 27
Buckeye Country 105.5 FM and 1590 AM will host Boofest 2011, presented in
part by the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association. This year's event will be
Thursday, Oct. 27 from 5-7 p.m. on the Courthouse Square in uptown
Hillsboro. There will be a "pet parade" and costume judging contests for the
kids. Children can start their trick-or-treating early with the businesses
in town starting at 5 p.m. (countywide it is 6-8 p.m.). There will be a
contest of the businesses to see who decorates the best leading up to and
during the event. There will be food vendors this year for the first time
from select non-profit groups to raise money for their causes.

Samaritan Outreach
open house Oct. 9
Samaritan Outreach Services will host an open house and reception on
Sunday, Oct. 9 from noon until 4 p.m. at their building at 537 N. East
Street in Hillsboro.
According to the organization, the event will allow the community
to see how lives are being changed through local
assistance, prayers and generosity. Samaritan Outreach will take the
opportunity to show guests the dedicated efforts of their staff and
volunteers; the positive effects of the mission in providing services
to the community; and to encourage the community to continue to
provide donations, prayers and support.
AAUW, Altrusa hold
annual book sale
The Hillsboro area branch of the American Association of University
Women and Altrusa are preparing for the annual book sale. Barrels for
the collection of gently used books have been placed in the Leesburg,
Greenfield, Lynchburg and Hillsboro libraries; Save-A-Lot market in
Greenfield; and Kroger and Community Markets in Hillsboro. No
magazines, encyclopedias, texts or condensed books, please.
The book sale will be held at the Highland County Administration
Building in Hillsboro on Thursday, Nov. 3 from noon-6 p.m.;
Friday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10
a.m.-1 p.m. Money raised will provide scholarships and support
literary projects.
Leesburg Lions host
pancake breakfast Oct. 15
The Leesburg Lions Club will be having their annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at the Leesburg United Methodist Church (corner of S.R. 28 and Church Street). Center holds free workshops
The Highland County Employment Center will host free workshops open to
the community in October. As seating is limited, attendees are asked
to register by calling (937) 393-1933 ext. 138. A Microsoft Word
workshop will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 2-4 p.m. A Microsoft Excel
workshop will be held Tuesday, Oct. 25 from 2-4 p.m. The goal of these
training classes is to prove an overview of Microsoft programs and how
to perform basic, everyday functions. Attendees will get hands-on
experience using each software program.

Connie Cole of Hillsboro has entered two head of Alpine in the dairy
goats division of the 38th annual North American International
Livestock Exposition (NAILE).
The NAILE is recognized as the world's largest purebred livestock show
with more than 23,000 entries and nearly $700,000 in prizes and
awards. Scheduled for Nov. 5-18, the event takes place at the Kentucky
Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky.

Leesburg Lions host
pancake breakfast Oct. 15
The Leesburg Lions Club will be having their annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at the Leesburg United Methodist Church (corner of S.R. 28 and Church Street). The “all you can eat” breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, biscuits and gravy and beverage. Free will donation. The public is invited to attend.
Highland County Employment
Center holds free workshops
The Highland County Employment Center will host free workshops open to
the community in October. As seating is limited, attendees are asked
to register by calling (937) 393-1933 ext. 138. A Microsoft Word
workshop will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 2-4 p.m. A Microsoft Excel
workshop will be held Tuesday, Oct. 25 from 2-4 p.m. The goal of these
training classes is to prove an overview of Microsoft programs and how
to perform basic, everyday functions. Attendees will get hands-on
experience using each software program.

Connie Cole of Hillsboro has entered two head of Alpine in the dairy
goats division of the 38th annual North American International
Livestock Exposition (NAILE).
The NAILE is recognized as the world's largest purebred livestock show
with more than 23,000 entries and nearly $700,000 in prizes and
awards. Scheduled for Nov. 5-18, the event takes place at the Kentucky
Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky.
