Buford Memorial Day service
By Rudy Diskete
The Buford Memorial Day service will be May 26 at the Buford Cemetery to honor fallen veterans beginning at 11 a.m.
People often confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day; the following will explain the difference between the two holidays.
Memorial Day: The holiday honors military personnel who died in service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.
Veterans Day: This holiday honors everyone who has served in the military, whether or not they served in wartime or died in wartime.
The May 26 services include:
• Opening prayer/Pledge of Allegiance: Bob Cockerell, Minister Buford Church of Christ.
• Musical Medley/National Anthem: Whiteoak High School Band, Director Alex McKenna.
• Guest Speaker: Staff Sergeant Steve Murray, U.S. Army 1959-68 (Korea, Dominican Republic, Germany and Vietnam).
• Rifle volley: Highland County Veterans Honor Guard.
• "Taps:" Whiteoak High School band.
• Closing prayer and remarks: Glenn Hess, Elder Union Church of Christ.
We would like to give a special thank-you to the Rammel family, Mark Rembis and others for their continued support in making sure that each and every one of our veterans have a United States flag on their gravesite.
Also, thank you to the Clay Township trustees for placing the weather-proof bulletin board on the side of the building to keep a list of all 268 hometown veterans and their location within the cemetery.
