Adena receives bronze award for helping victims of severe heart attacks

CHILLICOTHE – Every year, almost 250,000 people experience a STEMI type of heart attack. Unfortunately, a significant number don't receive prompt therapy critical in restoring blood flow in these severe heart attacks. 

STEMI patients at Adena Medical Center are an exception and the health system was recently honored for its efforts in better addressing this condition and providing appropriate therapy.

A Bronze Award from the American Heart Association’s “Mission Lifeline” was presented in recognition of the health system’s performance in treating STEMI patients during a three-month period ending earlier this year.

“The award signifies that Adena has an outstanding STEMI program, which has been made possible by the efforts of our excellent emergency department staff and our superb catheterization team members and interventional cardiologists,” said Bob Newland, Adena’s EMS Liaison and representative to American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline.

The award recognizes the hard work the entire team put into making this program “the best in our region,” said Dr. John Young, Medical Director of Adena Cardiology.

“This Bronze Award and subsequent awards will go a long way in Adena's efforts to become recognized as a nationally certified Regional STEMI Center,” Newland added.

 STEMI stands for ST-elevation myocardial infarction, a severe heart attack caused by a prolonged period of blocked blood supply that affects a large area of the heart, which carries a substantial risk of death and disability

Mission: Lifeline is the American Heart Association's national initiative to advance systems of care for STEMI patients. It seeks to reduce mortality and morbidity and improve the overall quality of care for STEMI patients.

The ultimate goal is saving lives by closing the gaps that separate STEMI patients from timely access to appropriate treatments.Hospitals involved in Mission: Lifeline strive to improve care in both acute treatment measures and discharge measures.

“This is the first year awards have been presented to hospitals as part of Mission: Lifeline’s Award and Recognition Program for qualifying Hospital STEMI Programs,” Newland said.
