Wendell L. Harewood Sr., 85, of Hillsboro, passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2022 at the Cleveland Clinic.
He was born Feb. 27, 1937 in Hillsboro, the son of the late Henry Bernard “Barney” and Harriett (Williams) Harewood.
He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and was a life member of the Wayman Chapel AME Church. He was ordained an Itinerate Deacon in 1962 and completed his studies and ordained an Itinerate Elder in 1964 and served as an associate minister in his home church Wayman Chapel AME Church until he was assigned as pastor of Shorter Chapel AME Church Greenfield and later as Pastor of Wayman Chapel AME Church Bainbridge. In 1972, he became Pastor of Wayman Chapel AME Church in Hillsboro and served as its pastor for 28 years. In 1999, he was appointed as Presiding Elder. He retired from active ministry in 2012 after 50 years of service.
During this time, he continued to serve in the United States Postal Service. In 1979, he was appointed Postmaster of the Hillsboro Post Office. He retired from the Postal Service in 1999 after 45 years of service. Mr. Harewood was also extremely active with many local organizations and charities, including being a long-serving member of the board of The Highland District Hospital Foundation, where he was still an active member.
Wendell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Freda J. (Adams) Harewood, whom he married June 25, 1960 in Chillicothe; a daughter, Tammy Miller of Hillsboro; two grandsons, Derek (Hillary) Ames and Devin Ames, both of Hillsboro; three great-grandchildren, Dinah, Drake and Dasia; a sister-in-law, Virginia Harewood of Hillsboro; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Wendell Lee Harewood Jr.; a grandson, Timothy Harewood; a great-granddaughter, Everleigh Harewood; three brothers, Perry Harewood, Bernard “Butch” Harewood and Michael W. Harewood; and a sister-in-law, Melba Harewood.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 9, 2022 at 1 p.m. at the Wayman Chapel AME Church in Hillsboro. Burial with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. at the church.
