Richard Spence Carr, 78, of the Taylorsville community, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2025 at the Hospice of Hope Ohio Valley Inpatient Center in Seaman.  
 
He was born Dec. 27, 1946 in Cincinnati, the son of the late Wilbur Edward and Helen Ruth (Spence) Carr. 

He spent most of his life in the Taylorsville area. Richard was a 1964 graduate of Whiteoak High School. He attended The Ohio State University and was a four-year member of The Ohio State Marching Band. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1968. He received his U.S. Army Commission through ROTC and spent six months in Ft. Knox, Ky., until he received orders for the 14th Armored Calvary Regiment in Bad Hersfeld, West Germany. He then went to Ben Hoa, South Vietnam to be with the 1st Air Calvary Division for a year and achieved rank of captain. He then resigned his commission on his way back to the United States. After he came home, he helped his father on the farm, and when his father had a major heart attack, he took over the management of the farming operation until he turned it over to his son, Jim. 

Richard was a lifetime member of Union Church of Christ, where he served in the capacity of trustee, deacon, treasurer, song leader and teacher. He was a founding owner of Star Cinemas, a partner in Five Points Implement Company, and he served on the Merchants National Bank Board for 22 years. He was also a member of The Ohio Farm Bureau and a Pioneer Seed salesman for many years. He enjoyed working with everyone in these businesses and boards. Richard enjoyed raising dahlias and sharing bouquets and visits with friends. He hunted and collected gemstones, arrowheads, and artifacts throughout his life.
 
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Rita Kay (Tissot) Carr; three children, Christa Ann Carr, James Christian (Kimberly) Carr and Holly Beth (Michael) McLean; three grandchildren, Margaret Rae (Caleb) West, Atlee Christian Carr and Lydia Rae Carr. He was also looking forward to the impending birth of his first great-grandchild.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Helen Carr.
 
Funeral services will be held at Union Church of Christ, 3021 N. Taylorsviile Road, Hillsboro, Friday, March 21 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Robert Robinson officiating. Interment will follow in the Union Cemetery, where the Highland County Honor Guard will accord full military honors.

Friends will be received at Union Church of Christ on Thursday, March 20 from 4-7 p.m.
 
His family would like to thank the Hospice of Hope in Adams County for their compassionate care in his final days.
