Nina Lea (Bell) Wharton, 93, of Peebles, passed away Nov. 26 at the Adams County Manor Nursing Home in West Union after a long illness.
Nina was born Jan. 2, 1929 in Barnesville to Oscar and Mary Bell.
Nina was a 1947 graduate of Barnesville High School in Belmont County. For 27 years, she was a reporter, columnist and society editor for the Hillsboro Press-Gazette. After retiring from the newspaper, she was executive director of the Highland County Society for Children and Adults, a local nonprofit charity that assists needy and elderly residents of Highland County.
Nina will be remembered fondly by family and friends for a fierce work ethic, can-do spirit, hosting fun parties, her bridge-playing prowess, a homemade tomato juice recipe that produced southern Ohio's best Bloody Marys and her love of Doritos, Dove bars and Perry Mason reruns.
Nina is survived by John Wharton, her high school sweetheart and husband of 73 years; daughter, Marilyn of Peebles; son, Dann (Lisa) of Hillsboro; son, Dennis (Lisa Ingram) of Ashburn, Va.; grandchildren, Ryan (Kelly) of St. Johns, Fla., Drew (Nichole) of Springboro, Isaac (Kelly) of Washington, D.C. and Sierra and Henry of Ashburn, Va.; great-grandchildren, Vincent, Emerleigh, Oliver, Harrison, Willow and Landrie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Paul and Gene Bell.
A private family celebration of her life will be held at a later date. The Wharton family thanks Adams County Manor Nursing Home and Promedica Hospice for their generous care.
