Maj. Floyd L. "Mac" McCray, 98, of Midland, passed away peacefully at home Monday, Dec. 5, 2022.
He was born Dec. 23, 1923 in Irvine, Ky., the was the son of Floyd Lee McCray Sr. and Linnie Bell (LeMaster) McCray.
Floyd was a retired combat veteran of the United States Army. He answered the call to arms in 1943. Serving throughout France and Germany, he received a battlefield commission during the Battle of the Bulge. In 1953, Major McCray was assigned to the 40th Division as Combat Company Commander throughout the Korean War. During the Cold War, he served to hold back the Russians on the Czechoslovakian border. Stateside, Maj. McCray taught numerous combat survival schools until his retirement in 1983.
In 2011, being a lifetime member of VFW Post 9094, Maj. McCray was an early advocate of the project to build the Highland County Veterans Memorial in Hillsboro.
A beloved member of the Highland County Senior Citizens Center, he brought joy to many with his love for music by playing banjo with his friends in their band for many years.
He leaves his wife, Judy, to grieve along with beloved family and friends. He was a loved member of the Lynchburg First Church of Christ.
On his birthday, Dec. 23, 2022, there will be a memorial celebration at the Lynchburg First Church of Christ. Visitation will start at 1 p.m. until time of memorial celebration. The Highland County Honor Guard will preform military rites at 2 p.m. After the service, everyone is invited to stay for birthday cake and ice cream.
