Goldie M. Hammon passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 24, 2022 at Cape May in Wilmington.
She was born Sept. 23, 1926 in West Union to the late Alfred and Clara Stewart.
After graduation from Adams Township in 1943, Goldie worked at Wright-Patterson AFB in the controller’s office as a bookkeeper. In March 1947, she married George and began life as a military wife. As well as assignments in Japan and Germany, where they loved experiencing the culture, customs and forming lifelong friendships, they were stationed at posts throughout the U.S.
Goldie was a member of Wilmington United Methodist Church. She was there an hour early to secure her parking space and in time to visit with friends as they arrived. She volunteered at Clinton Memorial Hospital for 45 years. She was a 64-year member of OES, Mother Adviser for Rainbow Girls and worked with Shriners to provide toys for the burn hospital in Cincinnati. She was 4-H leader for Martinsville Hobby Timers and an active member of Yani.
Goldie was a letter writer. She started each day writing to friends and family, just checking in and thinking of you. She never forgot a special occasion. For her 90th birthday, friends gave her boxes of cards and stamps, knowing she’d use every one. She treasured her friends. She sewed beautifully — everything from wedding gowns to doll clothes. She was a voracious reader — non-fiction, biographies and history, stories of valor — and she loved watching “Jeopardy.”
Goldie was a kind and loving wife and mother. She championed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was there to share in their celebrations, activities and accomplishments. When it came to praise, she said it’s not bragging when you’re telling the truth. Her family is so very thankful to have had her in their lives.
Surviving are her daughters, Melanie (Michael) Moseley of Robins, Iowa and Emily (Stephen) Payne of Wilmington; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jonathan) Tiemeier of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Christopher (Angela) Moseley of Litchfield Park, Ariz., Lee (Jenna) Rose of Glenburnie, Md., Nathaniel (Cassidy) Rose of Blanchester, Lindsay (Dusty) Speelman of Clarksville, Riley Payne of Wilmington and Summer Payne of Hillsboro; and great-grandchildren, Payton and Wade Wells, Zoe Tiemeier, Ben and Allie Moseley, Aidan and Jaxson Rose, Gracie and Wyatt Rose and Addison Speelman. The family wishes to thank the staff of Cape May for their care, compassion and kindness.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mabel Setty; and her beloved husband of 41 years, George D. Hammon.
Friends will be received Friday, Dec. 2 from 11 a.m. - noon, followed by song and prayer at the Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home, Wilmington. Immediately following the service, burial will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery.
