Southern State Community College's Your Place program will mark its 30th anniversary with a special celebration 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium on Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro.
Guest speaker for the afternoon will be motivational speaker Gayle Davis of Beavercreek. Following the recognition of past classes and staff, and the presentation of awards, light refreshments will be served in the atrium.
All past participants and speakers are invited to attend; more than 3,900 people have graduated from the program since its inception in 1979. Throughout its 30-year history, the program has been under the direction of Nancy Wolford, Karen Davis and Sue Evans, with assistance from past and current staff members Rhonda Fannin, Patricia Caraway, Timi Callender, Jean Singleton, Ellen Olsen, Donna Thompson and Amy Saff.
"Your Place works with many individuals who are taking steps to change their lives," said Sue Evans, current program director. "Many must overcome numerous challenges in finding economic independence, including limited education, little or no paid workforce experience, disabilities or language
barriers. The Your Place program is a critical link between individuals-in-transition obtaining additional education and life skills."
The Your Place program assists individuals-in-transition‹single parents, displaced homemakers, single pregnant women and anyone who needs to develop new skills in order to earn a livable wage due to divorce, disability, unemployment or underemployment in achieving their goals of education and/or employment.
Your Place program classes emphasize self esteem, goal setting, decision making, communication skills, conflict resolution, time/stress management,
budgeting, parenting skills and more. Students also are instructed on conducting a career search and learning basic computer skills, such as word processing and utilizing the Internet.
"Classes are a great opportunity for us to share Your Place and Southern State's successful strategies for helping others in achieving economic self-sufficiency and to learn from each other," said Rhonda Fannin, instructor. "We have witnessed many people who have transformed their lives."
Funding partners for the Your Place program include Verizon Foundation of Ohio, General Electric's Community Service Fund, Carl Perkins Federal Funding, United Way of Greater Cincinnati, Southern State Community College and the Southern Ohio Center of Excellence.
The next 11-week session of Your Place will begin in January. Classes will be held two days per week, from 9-11:45 a.m., beginning the week of Jan. 4 and ending the week of March 15. The sessions are offered quarterly on Southern State's Central Campus in Hillsboro, South Campus in Fincastle, and Fayette Campus in Washington C.H. Upon successful completion of the program, participants earn six college credit hours which can be used as electives toward the completion of a degree.
