Strickland attends Pence kickoff event

Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland helped Hillsboro resident Pete Pence officially kick off his campaign Thursday night to be Ohio's 91st District Representative. 

 

Held at the Hillsboro Elks Lodge, Strickland said that he was told that in attendance at the event were Democrats, Republicans and Tea Party members. 

 

"That's wonderful, Pete," Strickland said to his fellow Democrat. "That's what we need: people in public office who can bring people together." 

 

Strickland said that he wanted to pledge his support to Pence during his campaign. 

 

Joking with the crowd, Strickland said one of the reasons he was speaking at the event was, "Because no one says no to Dinah," referring to Highland County Democratic Party Chairperson Dinah Phillips. 

 

But he said he wanted to be there because he supports what Pence stands for and wants to help in any way he can. 

 

Pence, a Hillsboro City Council member, will face Rep. Cliff Rosenberger of Ohio's 86th District in the November general election. 

 

"You have to work hard," Strickland said to Pence. "You have to go to the people, look them in the eye and answer their questions. What we need are people willing to come together in good faith to solve problems."
