Resurfacing projects win top paving award; District 9 employees recognized

Chillicothe -The Ohio Department of Transportation - District 9 and two of its contractors have been recognized for a job well done following recent resurfacing projects in Pike and Ross and Jackson counties.
ODOT District 9’s Construction Department and the Shelly Company received the 2009 Quality Award for Asphalt Paving from the Flexible Pavements of Ohio Association for their resurfacing project on state Route 104 in Pike County. Likewise, District 9 and Shelly and Sands were also honored with the 2009 Quality Award from Flexible Pavements for the resurfacing of U.S. Route 35 in Ross and Jackson counties.
“We are very pleased with the recognition that has been given to our district and the construction teams which oversaw these projects,” said District 9 Deputy Director James A. Brushart. “We have a fine group of engineers, transportation managers and highway technicians working throughout the district, and I offer my congratulations to them and all who were involved with both projects.”
The district’s construction teams worked in tandem with the contractors to assure quality control for materials, workmanship and smooth riding quality. Both projects were awarded and completed during last year's construction season.
Leading the Pike-104 paving project for ODOT were Transportation Manager Dave Covert of Highland County and highway technicians Blaine Bradds, also of Highland County, and Mick Foster and Ricky Brown, both of Adams County. In Jackson and Ross counties, Jack Tipton was the transportation manager heading the U.S. 35 crew which included Jon McMillen, Myron Hayth, Roger Rader and Brad Brown, all of Jackson County. Victor Picciano served as the area field engineer over both projects.
Flexible Pavements of Ohio is an association for the development, improvement and advancement of quality asphalt pavement construction. The organization provides technical information and training for its members and customers on asphalt pavement design, production and construction.
The Shelly Company of Thornville, Ohio, was awarded a contract for $1,045,215 to resurface 6.5 miles of Ohio-104 in Pike County, between state Route 32 and the Scioto County line, and Shelly and Sands of Zanesville, Ohio, was awarded a contract for $2,769,883 to resurface 4.28 miles of U.S. Route 35 between Richmond Dale in Ross County and Township Road 216 (Springer Road) in Jackson County.
