New Orthopaedic/Spine Unit opens Monday at Adena

Adena Health System’s new and dedicated 20-bed Orthopaedic/Spine Unit officially opens Monday on the third floor of the newly constructed Northeast Wing, providing a new level of orthopaedic care to the 13-county area served by Adena. 

“We’re making a great team greater by mobilizing our resources into one area, which will allow us to be more focused on orthopaedic patient care,’ said Dr. Brian Cohen, medical director of Adena Bone & Joint Center. 

Just as importantly, he added, is the addition of Dr. Jeffrey C. Glenn to the new center. Dr. Glenn, who completed his fellowship in total joint replacement at the Cleveland Clinic, joins the Adena staff on July 1. 

Based on his skills and training, Adena’s new orthopaedic unit will be in an excellent position to draw patients from as far away as Kentucky and central Ohio for total joint replacement surgery, according to Dr. Cohen. 

The availability of surgeons who are fellowship-trained in total joint replacement, both in hip and knee replacement, is not something you typically find in a hospital system the size of Adena, the medical director said. 

Dr. Glenn completed medical school at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens and his residency at Ohio University/St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. He completed a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. 

The total joint replacement program also will feature a patient navigator who will work with patients and families before and after surgery, providing education and support.  

“The opening of the new Orthopaedic/Spine Unit,” Cohen said, “will allow us to link all our excellent ancillary services to create a common goal for the patient.” 

The goal is an activity level for the patient that is the same or better than before their procedure. Having a dedicated unit also will create a common healing environment, he added. 

“We have the best physicians, all of whom are fellowship trained in all the major subspecialties of orthopedics,” Cohen said. “And we have excellent support services in the operating room, on the nursing units and in our physical therapy department.” 

Based on a variable acuity model adopted by other hospitals around the nation, patient rooms in the new orthopaedic/spine unit are large, spacious and bright, and are designed so family members and friends can visit comfortably with patients.
