The Marshall Township Fire Department is proud to announce the acquisition of a new state-of-the-art fire truck, made possible through a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG). The new truck, custom-built by Weis Fire and Safety Equipment of Salina, Kan., marks a significant upgrade in the department’s emergency response capabilities.

The grant process, from award to delivery, took approximately 18 months. The new vehicle replaces the department’s aging grass truck, which has been in service since 1977 and is still used today. While the old truck served the department well for decades, it no longer meets the safety or operational standards required for today’s emergency response.

“Our old truck was reliable for its time, but it can only carry two personnel and 200 gallons of water,” said Fire Chief David Garen. “It lacks the modern safety features and equipment capacity needed for current demands. It’s outdated and increasingly considered unsafe for road use.”

The newly delivered truck is equipped with:

• A 400-gallon water tank and a 30-gallon foam cell;

• Remote-controlled firefighting nozzles and a diesel-powered pump, all operable from inside the cab;

• Battery-operated, state-of-the-art extrication tools;

• Enhanced safety features including airbags, seatbelts and front and rear cameras; and

• A heavy-duty frame for safer load handling.

This vehicle will serve as a first-response unit for a variety of emergencies, including wildland fires, vehicle accidents, and car fires. It also enhances the department’s rescue capabilities, now operating two full sets of extrication equipment across two trucks.

“This truck significantly increases our ability to serve not just Marshall Township, but also the surrounding communities,” added Chief Garen. “It allows a single firefighter to control firefighting operations from inside the cab if needed — improving both efficiency and safety.”

The Marshall Township Fire Department consists of 14 dedicated volunteers and is actively seeking new members.

“I’ve been part of this department since 1995,” Chief Garen said. “Marshall Township is a community where everyone looks out for each other. We hope to inspire the next generation to join us and carry on the tradition of service.”
