Local athletes participate in Special Olympics Summer Games

Highland County Special Olympics has selected 23 athletes to represent the organization at the 2011 Special Olympics Ohio State Summer Games.
Athletes from Lynchburg-Clay Schools and Hills & Dales Training Center will represent Highland County.
These athletes will be competing in the 42nd annual Special Olympics Ohio State Summer Games, a year-round training and competition program for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
The Games, held June 24-26 at the Ohio State University in Columbus, will feature competition for more than 2,700 competitors from across the state. The program will include competition in eleven sports, recreational clinics, a night out with the Columbus Clippers, and the colorful Opening Ceremonies, which will take place in Ohio Stadium.
Special Olympics Ohio serves more than 17,000 citizens with intellectual disabilities, with an event calendar that includes seven state-level championships and more than 125 local and area events in 23 Special Olympic type sports.
Highland County athletes will compete in track and field events including 50M Dash, 100M Dash, 100M Walk, Shot-put, Softball Throw, and Long Jump.
Kraig Walker (Highland County Board of DD) serves as the local coordinator. In addition to the 23 athletes, eight coaches will attend.
The Grand Lodge of Ohio (Free and Accepted Masons), Kroger, and the Ohio State Moose Association provide the main sponsorships for the athletes to attend. The remaining portion comes from local donations and events, such as the recent bowling event at the Highland Lanes in Hillsboro.[[In-content Ad]]
