Jury finds Hillsboro man guilty of misdemeanor assault

After deliberating for nearly five hours, a jury in Highland County Common Pleas Court found a Hillsboro man guilty of misdemeanor assault. 

 

Michael King Jr., 24, was indicted on two charges of felonious assault in October 2008, along with three other defendants. The co-defendants subsequently pleaded guilty to charges in the case. According to the Highland County Prosecutor's Office, King fled the state of Ohio for Tennessee, and he had to be extradited to stand trial on the charges. 

 

During a day-long trial in Highland County Common Pleas Court Thursday, the state, represented by Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins and Assistant Highland County Prosecutor Molly Bolek, alleged that in August 2008, King and his co-defendants assaulted a man while at a residence in the 10000 block of Mad River Road. The assault was committed, they alleged, with brass knuckles, which under the circumstances were considered a deadly weapon by law enforcement.

 

King's attorney, Jim Boulger of Chillicothe, alleged that King acted in self-defense.

Among the items presented during trial were photos of the victims that showed him covered in blood, with swollen eyes. 

 

During the trial, the state presented six witnesses, including officers with the Highland County Sheriff's Office, King's co-defendants and victims. 

 

The defense presented four witnesses, including the defendant, who took the stand in his own defense. 

 

The jury began deliberating around 4 p.m. Thursday and returned the guilty verdict on misdemeanor assault before 9 p.m. 

 

Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss sentenced King to 180 days in jail.
