Judge pauses Trump 'freeze' on federal grants

A federal judge has paused the implementation of a Trump administration order that would have frozen the issuance of federal grants and loans – until at least Feb. 3.

Judge Loren AliKhan issued her decision just before the order was set to take effect.

AliKhan was appointed to the District Court in December 2023.

In January 2023, legal scholar Ilya Shapiro was set to begin his tenure as executive director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution. He posted tweets criticizing Joe Biden’s pledge to consider only black women for a Supreme Court seat. Shapiro’s tweets lead to his suspension by the law school administration.
